Service list items

They are quoting £951 for service, oil, air and fuel, brake fluid and gearbox (which I had done by the indie last year.

Take out the gearbox and brake fluid, £515, so I called them (as recommended), they offered basic oil change, no inspection, £199, if I use their quote and remove air and fuel, £255.

So I'll be sticking to local, doing the air and fuel myself, change the cabin on too while I'm in there
Regardless of price, I believe it’s best to use who you trust to do the work well, who you trust to put things right when things go wrong, and who you can trust to advise you on work which is required.

For some people that’s themself, for others the bloke next door, for some a local garage or marque specialist, and then those who use a main dealer. There’s no one size first all.

You now know what’s due, and you can adjust for what has been done recently, and get likel for like quotes. I doubt many main dealers will give breakdown cover if you opt not to perform the additional age/mileage dependent items.

Pop your details in here and post a screenshot of what it says is actually due based upon the schedule.

The scedule is variable though so I cant see how this is accurate? Its called Active Assyst or Acitive Service System. It adapts depending on driving style temps etc.

I thought they had dropped the variable servicing before 2012 when the OP’s car was registered?

I don’t have any cars with variable servicing any more so I will probably be a bit rusty - the last one I had was the ML 270 CDi which you did some work on probably 15 years ago - good times.

In that the interval for the service was variable - because it was based upon the likely oil degradation varying based upon use - but I thought the time and mileage dependent were fixed interval?

Tye main dealer now tells me that they ignore what the schedule says and only perform the items that the car says it needs, and the service care plan team won’t approve anything else. Of course people paying their own invoice can ask that other service operations are performed.

That's what we do. The car works it out for itself what it needs. We do have to double check sometimes though as its not 100% accurate.

I wish MB would simplify their service schedules. Its always been excessively complicated and people don't understand it even when I try to explain it. Even back in the day working on the late 80's MB's the schedules were complicated and different on each model and sometimes different depending on engine.

So £199 was a value service then.
Yeah, but not much value in that price given others have mentioned £135-150. they didn't directly call it a value, but said it was the simplist one they could offer.

Surely a potential problem with this is that the 'car' relies on whomever has updated the onboard service screen has done it correctly. I agree with BlackC55 though in that the schedules seem to be set out in an unnecessarily complicated way although, in reality, IF you have the schedule set out in the service book it's pretty easy to understand.

I gave up with my dealer years ago after having had a long 'conversation' with them simply because their computer said that something wasn't due. It was due; initially they point blank refused to do it but eventually agreed with me that it was due. It should have been a simple process, but it was aggravated by a complete belief in 'computer says', rather than common sense. I much prefer being able to talk with somebody who does the work / understands things rather than 'I can only do what the computer tells me'.

I've even had friends tell me that their main dealer (not MB) has refused to do additional, but not scheduled work (this was an additional interim oil-change), because 'we're only allowed to do what the computer says is needed'. That was on a privately-owned car (ie not leased etc.) and where the customer had suggested 'Do the scheduled work and update the system, I'll pay, then just do the other thing, I'll pay separately, don't put it on the computer'. No, can't do it. Nuts. Rant over ;)
