single wiper

My single wiper does'nt smear at all, and i disagree with the view that the twin blade setup clears more of the screen. The single wiper only leave's 2 unswept bits in the very top corners of the screen. Somewhere your not likely to be looking, unless you like to plane spot whilst driving :D

Just my 2 peneth.

Stu :)

Clears 86%!

From my '91 CE brochure, quote: "Recessed panoramic windscreen wiper which clears 86% of the screen."

Mind you, it doesn't say which 86% though! LOL :D

Unfortunately it is not 'in the very top corners of the screen' that is missed. Fine for the average height, or less, but for a minority of 'tall' drivers the piece missed is a slight problem.

I accept that you have not had a problem with 'smearing', but just take a look at those that have.

When I complained to my dealer he was fully aware of it, and accepted it was indeed a well known problem on some 210's.

I totally accept that you do not have either problem and the 210 is a wonderful car, but it is my personal believe that the two bladed system on the 211 was NOT fitted because of cost. It still has that Mercedes-Benz 'weird sweep' which is a technical marvel.

John

I'd nearly agree 100% but I do get 2 smears, just to the left and right of the center. Not a problem though as it is hidden by my snooper and iPaq!!!

Surely the best judges of the 210/211 wiper system setup is the end user who has EXTENDED experience of both :D.

We had the 210 for three years and have had the 211 since February. My personal vote goes to the 211 with an overwhelming vote.

What have other actual owners of both models got to add. (not those that have just had a test drive, sorry)

Forgot to add the windscreen washer system of the 210 was the best I have EVER experienced and it is a pity the 211 did not have a similar set-up.

John

I quite agree , we had a 210 for 50k miles and have now had the 211 for 16k and i can say without a doubt the twin wiper system is silent , smear free and being tall covers that bit in the screen you were refering it earlier.

The same goes for the 202 and the 203 , having had both , the twin wiper does the job that little bit better. The only problem with the 203 is the winscreen washer bottle is TINY . I mean , its only abouty 3L which doesnt last long.

Thank you very much indeed for the post, I thought that perhaps it was me, and I was being too pedantic. :D

Folks that are not 'vertically endowed' (I am too tall) clearly do not take this important fact into account.

When did Mercedes ditch the single wiper? Any idea why? All the new Mercs I've seen latley have the traditional dual wipers.

I do apologise...but i thought as the first post above was talking about the single wiper in general not just the w210 and w211??!!!! But if my views on the single wiper setup are not valid, just because i own an "old" mercedes(with its single wiper still working fine after 14 years!!)then sorry

Il try to remember my place next time i post :(

Hey slow down,
I certainly am NOT having any sort of dig at your specific vehicle. I for one was pointing out the pro's and cons of the two models.

'Someone' had a very slight 'dig' about 'plane spotting' but no doubt it was meant as a joke??

Your views are obviously valued, but I was just making the point that the 211 blade system is an improvement.

PLEASE, please do not think your point is not valid. ;)

Having said that, "Just remember your place with that 'old banger'" ;) :) :)

Friends????? Please??

Regards,
John

Single wipers look better :D :p

But I suppose it has a job to do! :)

No experience in driving a W203 or W211 though, so I can comment on the effectiveness of the new system! I have noticed smearing on older 190Es and W202s though. I think cleaning (not just washing or using the washer jets!) the windscreen (and the blade) seemed to help?

Cheers,

Will

Old and NO scruples (me, not the car)

I can't comment on the single wiper, as I have not had experience with it.
The 211’s flexible blades clear the rain well and are quiet but they just go straight over the bugs and don't clear them, even if I wash and wipe straight away. On the way back from Germany I passed through a swarm of moths and I had to pull over to clean the windscreen by hand, as the wipers wouldn’t touch them. Now I clean the screen every couple of days by hand to get the bugs off. I’ve never had this problem with any other car.

:) Well I'm bug***ed. That does not sound very good at all. As you correctly point out the 211 does not have the conventional metal type arm, but so far, touch wood I have not experienced any of these 'armour plated' bugs. The rubber of the blade is exactly the same rubber of any other blade. Weird!!!

Could it be the speed these insects are impacting onto the screen?? Or are they baking straight onto the glass?

Sorry to hear about that experience.

Regards,
John

I think it is possibly due to less pressure of the blade on to the screen so they ride over the top of the bugs. The conventional metal arms may produce a more constant force along the length perhaps. It’s only minor problem though.

Totally agree,
Under advice needed, there is someone asking a question about the new E class 220CDI. Do you know anyone with such a beast??? :) :D

Take care
John
