SL 2002 dash lights stay on

Like the title says, the dash lights stay on overnight and kill the battery. Took bleedin' ages to find out what was killing the battery so fast. My wife spotted the lights still on one morning. It is just the lights round the rim of the cluster, not the needles or digits.

Phoned MB and they suggested booking it in for a diagnostic (Get real!) so I decided to play about with the settings. No joy.

Can anyone guess what I did that finally fixed it?

Damn! That was fast.

Bloody great clout on the top of the dash and the unwanted lights went out. It never ceases to amaze me how cr4p this car is.

Ha ha. I've usually had to do the opposite. Quick whack of heater controls to get the lights to come on!
