Any one know how difficult/easy it is to remove the instrument panel from an SL R129, I'm thinking to replace with one marked in Kmph for use here in France, maybe it's possible to buy an overlay for the existing mph intrument panel ? Any ideas ?

Easy. Get a couple of proper MB hooks (i think they are a w140 part number) and out it pops :)

It's roughly the same for any of these cars of that era -

"Whip out the cluster, I'm guessing you know how, I used a coat hanger, cut it in two, bent both the ends, slipped them in behind the cluster (I hate the word binnacle, I'm sure thats what boats have) and gave the whole thing a bloody good pull, in my car there are no speedo cables or pipes, just wires, I like wires, wires are good, wires are easy.
"

I've got an R129 instrument binnacle with the speedo in kmph. It came from a UK RHD R129 that had been ordered with kmph speedo for Continental use.

Be very careful removing the r129 cluster. They are known to crack when removed by tools. I would suggest removing the panel under the dash and pushing it from behind.

The 'V' grooves on the back of the 129 cluster where you locate the hooks are at each side i.e. just above 9 0'clock and 3 o'clock respectively. Don't be tempted to insert them higher up as you will damage the edge of the screen. They are quite tight so you will have to pull quite hard. The steering wheel acts as a good place to rest your thumbs while you pull against it.
