Hi I have just got a 03 SL500 when I press TV button it says no TV on command screen. Do I need to get a tuner, is this a big job? not that I want to sit in there and watch Tv but would be nice to have.
thanks
Paul

Yes, you will need a tuner. Also make sure it is a digital tuner. I thought about getting a tuner when I first bought the car but could not justify the cost. At the time I was quoted about £800!

Before you get a tuner check your build sheet to see if you have TV pre-wiring.

How can they justify £800 for a digital tuner? I have a Hauppaugel tuner for the computer which cost £59 including an aerial. Maybe someone could find a way of using one in the car.

Your car is a D2B based car (being 2003 model) not the later version ("MOST"). Im pretty sure MB did no digital tuner for D2B cars.
(D2B and MOST are the fibre optic standard used to connect the audio unit to the amplifiers, cd player etc etc)

On the SL, to retrofit TV tuner, you need to add
a) TV tuner
b) wiring loom
c) antenna amps (which connect to the antenna in the front windscreen)
- One of the antenna amps is frighteningly expensive because it also does the radio and remote control pickups.
- and as has been said the TV tuner is even more stupidly priced

So, its just a very expensive outing.

The difference between your £49 home box and the car variant is
a) car variant is very low volume and thus more expensive
b) it withstands being shaken for 200000 miles
c) it withstands very significant temperature changes
d) it integrates with the car stereo controls nicely
e) there needs to be some clever antenna system as you dont want a big external house aerial hanging off your car ;-)

Actually the quote was for a analogue tuner. That included fitting.

I have fitted a digital tuner to mine for a cost of £60 all in.
Mine has the analogue tuner already.

I will post all the info later if anyone wants it

As I already have the analogue tuner and the MB digital tuner for the D2B system is a not really integrated, plugging into the analogue audio/video auxiliary inputs and with its own separate remote control, I would be interested in the details of your installation.

Please do post. I presume you've used one of the aux inputs on the existing TV tuner to get the video/audio into the car.

What did you do with the antenna wiring & how did you deal with power for the digital tuner, and how do you deal with remote control

MB have an official digital tuner 'add on' to use with the analogue tuner - officially only for MOST based cars - and it comes with an antenna splitter cable and a radio based remote control so tuner can be hidden away properly.

Are you sure it is only for MOST cars Richard? I have a WIS document which says it is "for 215 up to 31.08.02 with CODE (860) TV Tuner", which describes my car, giving instructions for retrofitting a digital TV Tuner.

The box used was a Bush scart box (DFTA 1001), £25 from Tescos http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.100-3419.aspx they are the smallest
The AV sockets are on the rear of the tuner.
You need a line out scart, to female RCA jacks http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00077DC6A/?tag=amazon0e9db-21 3 phono leads. L R plus yellow video. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000LNEUY8/?tag=amazon0e9db-21
You chop the power lead off from the mains adapter and wire the plus lead to the live in on the TV tuner and the negative to ground. (Take the power from the front Cigar lighter that is the only one that is safe and cuts the power when the car is switched off, thread it through the same way as the remote control pick up)
You need a normal male to female aerial lead and chop the male end off so the its long enough to splice into the cars antenna lead thats plugged into the TV tuner. You will see a plug with 4 wisiclik plugs, all thin and black leads. The existing tuners used 3 tuners (internal) and 4 aerial inputs, just cut the lead off the one nearest to the end,(you could cut off any one) and this wire with the new aerial lead that needs a Coax plug attached to plug into the digi box.
You can now plug the digi box into the live power supply, put the video and sound phono plus in and the aerial coax plug and the unit should switch on via the remote control.

Select the AV input that you have used on the TV in the car and you should see the display, and you can now tune into stations providing there is enough signal strength where the car is parked..

When all is working you will need to extend the lead of the remote control this is best done with a 4 way screened cable using heat shrink sleeving, and this can be run along the sills and the carpet, the door tread just pull up and off. Pull the draught excluder away from A pillar and run the lead behind the kick panel and stick under the passenger glove box/ dash.

I will try to find a picture of the Tuner in the boot, it has two sets of AV inputs

Yep, WIS also has a document for my car W220 which is a yr 2000 car so also D2B network.

Alan,
How well does the Bust unit work? I'm about to do the same project (via my analogue tuner).
What sort of picture do you get? Just wondering, cos this device is designed to be static (i.e. in your home). Does it work when being constantly moved about? There are quite a few DVB-T units for sale out there that seem to be specifically for cars. Just wondering what the different might be.

I assume the existing car aerial is good enough and you don't need to install a high diversity device, like the ones on eBay come with?

Thanks for any info.

Cheers,
shr.
