SL60 AMG

Wow that's very unusual ... the spheres on mine were replaced in 2010 at 13 years old. The car is drivable when they fail (with no warning lights), but the suspension is unusually hard.

I would hope it was exceptional. Between our two, it would make the mean replacement age nine years. But it was so long ago I can’t comment with any confidence on what was actually replaced, and I wouldn’t want to derail this thread any further.
Would like to know about the SL60.

I will be advertising my 1997 silver over black leather SL60 AMG online very soon. Very original UK car with 43,900 miles, low owners and a great service history. I will post a link as soon as it’s online.

Hi guys, here’s my car which is for sale if anyone is interested.

It’s a very original car in fantastic condition with a great service history.

I have appointed contemporary classics to sell my car. Any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you

I know it's not of it's time, and if you are buying as an investment then this is a no-no, but does anyone else think that these SL60s are crying out for some subtle rear bumper and exhaust mod to get some tasteful tips on display?

This SL60 sold at this weekend's Historics auction. I don't know what condition the car was in. 78k miles, sold for £25,760.

Hi yes I did see that car in person and it’s the same car which sold on the market 6 months ago for £35,500. 1998 MERCEDES-BENZ SL 60 AMG For Sale by Auction

If you look through the photos you will see it’s not in the best condition and the underneath requires attention (I’ve seen this in person)
As well as being nearly twice the mileage with no service book and very limited paper history I’m not surprised that it struggled to sell within its estimate.
I think someone had brought the car earlier on in the year and realised what work it needed.
No disrespect to the new owner or the car but it will be a great car to invest in to.
After all you get what you pay for!

The SL60 got built initially as an SL500, and had the standard style rear box. But at the time MB did sell an R129 AMG back box as a very expensive 'accessory' part, and this could be fitted to any version including the SL60. These are extremely rare ... I managed to find an unused 'old stock' one in Germany back in 2005. It does transform the back of the car, IMHO. It's purely a visual upgrade ... no difference to the noise/power/etc. when I had it fitted to my 500.

Kyran Bracken’s 53k mile SL60 is currently for sale on Car and Classic: 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL60 AMG For Sale By Auction | Car And Classic
Bidding currently at £24k. It’s in Jersey so I presume 20% VAT on import?

It's strange that SL60s seem to be slightly unloved at the moment, with that car at Historics losing so much in less than a year, while the next-gen SL65 fetched a crazy price at the same time, nearly £100k.

I always lusted after the SL60 though never drove one. Perhaps it's outshadowed by the SL70 and 73? SL60 seemed like a perfect balance to me. But maybe now, it's seen as just another SL AMG, and not even powerful by today's standards. Shame.

Meanwhile I drove the SL65 extensively and found it less balanced and usable than an SL55. Shades of the insane Brabus version Clarkson reviewed on Top Gear at the time.

SL 60s are really for collectors as the difference over a really good 500 is not that great for most driving, but the requested (if not necessarily acheived) price premium is considerable. Its rarity "value" which is fine but you wouldnt want to put too many miles on it. Depends what you want a 129 for.

I was offered a lovely SL60 by a member here some years back. Same year/colour as my 500, almost exactly the same (low) mileage and number of previous owners, and same FBMSH. I was seriously tempted but in the end simply couldn't justify the price to change. As mentioned the ultimate R129s (for both performance & rarity) are the various V12 AMG versions ... there was also a very rare SL55 with the M113 5.5 V8 (as used in the E55/CLK55/SLK55/C55/ML55/etc.).

I guess some of it comes down to bragging rights, the exclusivity, rarity etc - which a collector will clearly value. But to be honest an R129 is hardly a lightweight sports car and the additional power although probably nice to have is not going to make a huge difference to how the car behaves on UK roads, and it’s not as though you’d take an SL on track days?

In terms of justification of the value though, it’s probably not a bad investment. I mean if you’ve got the cash free to buy one you’d likely get the premium back in the future, and likewise if you’d bought one a few years back I’m sure you’d not regret the purchase cost either - they seem to be appreciating gently in value

It wasn’t so long ago that £10k was more than enough to buy the entry ticket. Those were the days!

Same here, they were obtainable anywhere back in 2019.
I managed to locate a new one from a friend in the UAE.
Paid him 2500 bucks for it.

Back in the day they were very expensive from MB (for just a back box) ... I vaguely remember a UK retail price of around £1500. I paid a fraction of that for mine - my wife is German so her dad went and picked it up, then brought it over to the UK in the back of his R Class on their next visit :)
