I've been thinking of an SL60 for some time....I missed Nick's (I was asleep at the time I think....that's my only excuse!)...have been looking about a bit but I see few advertised....any spotting greatly appreciated....no doubt a large pint for a solid lead...Thanks guys.

Get yourself a username on www.pistonheads.com, then set your e-mail alert for any new SL's that come up for sale.

It's all free and a good pro-active way to get classifieds in your inbox.

virtually all are advertised on auto trader so keep an eye there.
Otherwise contact a few indy merc specialists.
usually there are 2 or 3 advertised for sale this time of year, but for some reason its all gone quiet.......
They are few and far between so you may have to be patient.
There are few issues you need to be aware of over and above those of the SL500 but a couple I can think of:

- alloys - 18" split rim AMGs look great but are costly and difficult to refurb if required so bear this in mind. Original alloys, which of course are desirable, are likely to need refurbing as they will be around 10 yrs old by now.

- my first care (P reg) was stolen/recovered - keep an eye out for it - it was silver.

- suspension parts/bushes will need attention - it a big heavy car with firm suspension and low profile very wide tyres.

- check out the underside. Good clean underbody usually suggests a well-pampered garaged car.

- don't buy anything pimped up!

I sold my car to this chap: http://www.classic-benz.co.uk/index.htm - Andrew Stansfield is the proprietor and he is a very nice, knowledgeable chap.

I know he sold my car on in February but he may be able to help you source another.

Many thanks Nick....still don't know why I was asleep when yours was going.....I'm not a hurry as I'm very happy with my current SL....but I really do fancy a 60. Are they a lot heavier than the 500?

Thanks again.

Only one around at the mo seems to be this one

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C15032

and I think it's been doing the rounds ....in any case I could not live with that birds eye custard colour...blue black red or silver would be just dandy

That one has been up for sale for the last few years - it was green when it left the factory as well!

Parker's is fairly irrelevant in my experience with good 'classic' Mercs. Nick sold his for £23k IIRC albeit trade - some poor soul paid £28k for it from the dealer.

£20k would be more realistic for this one IMO.

Engine for one! It also has the larger brakes from the SL600.

Isn't the engine based on the 5 litre V8 (bored out)?

Agree on the brakes, presumably some different suspension parts too.

Suspension doesn't really carry any weight penalty - different springs and dampers basically.

The engine is bored and stroked with uprated internals - pistons, conrods, crank etc. I think the oil cooler and radiator is larger as well - been a while since I've seen one.

Me neither. I agonised over buying Nick's car, but in the end couldn't justify the cost of changing from the SL500.

That's easy....you ply SWMBO with plenty of Veuve and then spring...:D

They are around 40kgs heavier - depending on options / wheels etc.

you need to carry a really big wallet around as well.

Given that my car was one of, if not the, best left in the country it was good value at around £28k I think - will lose much less in depn than virtually anything else at that price as well (comparable perhaps to a good 993).
