My SL has been undergoing a few enhancements so I thought I would provide an update.

The car is an 18 month old SL62 R231 which I use for commuting (80 miles a day) and have done 6 track days in the last 12 months.

I dyno'd my car just after I bought it on DD rolling road and it produced 574 BHP which I was more than happy with.

Now to the task in hand.

Before I embarked on any mods I changed the filters and did dyno run on a different dd rolling road (12k miles of running in). The results came back with 581bhp.

Next up was a Rebellion piggy back box to avoid ecu drilling. The box was installed in 30mins. And then I had a 10 miles drive to the rolling road which allowed for adaption. The acceleration felt significantly stronger and the engine note more aggressive with some bigger bangs and pops. Two runs on the dyno (dd rolling road) produced a reading of 628bhp & 840 nm (I will attach the shoot out when I am on the pc as the ipad wont let me!). I have sinced tracked the car and its a different beast and clocked 156mph on the straight at Goodwood (10mph more than my c63) db at 4k revs went up from 92 to 99 on the sound check. Excellent result and thanks the Phil and Rebellion for the opportunity to be the test mule and for a great product.

My next mod was primarily to resolve a minor bug bear of mine the slight muted sound (compared to my old c63) under lower revs and after some research and RSK1 leap I decided on RADO down pipes with sports cats. The install was booked in with Eurocharged London and I hoped would significantly improve the sound and add some BHP but I had no idea how much.

Rado advertised pipes for the SL but when EC tried to order them they hadn't manufactured any so after a chat with Paul at EC we agreed the best option was to order some race pipes and sports cat separately and build the equivalent.

RADO shipped both the pipes and 1000bhp sports cats (200cell) a week later but once EC had measured them against another r231 they didn't fit. Paul spoke to the MD at world motor sports who said they had just built a set of pipes with the cats included and would overnight DHL from the US. All was looking up.

Yesterday was install day.

The new pipes arrived last week pre-assembled with the cats and were supposed to bolt straight on to the existing setup. The pipes were being fitted by Euro charged London but as a precaution they had booked a ramp at EMP an exhaust specialist just in case there were any issues. Once the car was on the ramp and the old pipes were removed it was quite obvious that both the angle of the cats and the length were not correct for my car. So the option were either send them back or get the cutter and the tig out!

Being the impatient sort the cutter and tig were deployed and after four hours of adjustments the pipes were installed. The team at EMP did a great job but this left me tight to get to the dyno before it shut.

On first fire-up the car had noticeably deeper tone but nothing to intrusive but when revved it sound like a different car. The stock car although good under full chat was an aural step down from my c63 but I would say its now a step up. I am really happy with the result it's sound like it should and really snarls, crackles and pops once you give it a bit more than a light touch.

After a 10mile drive in traffic I had time for one dyno run (not on the dyno dynamics as above) I am waiting for the spec. I tried to keep the temp down but not to much success.

The car was running hot but I was still expecting a BHP increase but it read 611bhp and this was peaking 500 revs earlier a drop of 17bhp (two other dyno's had the car running 628 and 627) Interestingly the torque had moved up by 104nm to 946nm. I am booking it in on the dyno dynamics next week so I can at least get one of the variables nailed.

Apart from the sound the car has definitely gained some more pull and on the road test it felt more urgent from 2k all the way to the red line. So pleased with the performance increase on the road.

once I get it onto the dyno dynamics I will report back again and hopefully with some timings.

Thanks to Paul (Savman) for yesterday and his persistence in getting this sorted I am chuffed.

Nice, but now I wish I had a 63.

Thanks Peter

You have the luxury of the 350 and the savagery of levante to come I just needed it in one package ;-)

Interested to hear this - sounds like you and the EC guys have been on quite a goose chase ! As you say Paul and Andy are great guys and highly understanding. Glad to know you are liking the sound though, if it's anything like mine I suspect you're very happy indeed. So what happens next and how do you begin rounding up some of the missing horses ?

Also what's the current thinking re a TCU map ?

Cheers R,

Not sure there are any horses missing to be honest. Dyno's are well dyno's. The car was very Hot as I had been on drive through rush hour to get there straight on without cooling down. Different dyno than the other two I had a benchmark from so I will book her into the two dd dyno's just to get me back to a consistent baseline ( well remove the dyno variable). The torque increase was a real surprise.

As mentioned the car feels quicker and sounds great I know why you've been smiling. The ODB TCU tool is ready I understand but I am now running at 946 nm of torque so want to understand the impact on the mechanicals and drivability before even considering throwing this at it.

Speak soon.

Now you're talking :)

I had turned the dial up on the box to 7 when I dyno'd at EC back to 6 for this run. Perhaps it hadn't adapted before??

Really pleased with the result. The exhaust is sounding better and better as it beds in. I think the tcu map would make a real difference to the gear change but I am not sure how drivable it would be if I lifted the torque limiters.

Great numbers Justin, really pleased you like the sound it does create a nice mix not to loud but much deeper when you open it up.

We can also offer these downpipes with bundled with a tuning box for the following Biturbo AMG's

G63
ML63
CLS63
E63

Great to read this, I was logging on to ask if MB had produced a new map for the R231 as I notice the car now comes standard with 585 bhp? Is there an upgrade available from AMG as the PP before was some utterly ridiculous price for a remap. I have all the other bits of the PP on mine like the slippy diff etc just didn't order the remap bit.

Mine is going great, only issues I have is the stupid slow gearchange in manual mode which is slower than in sport+ auto ??? and I'm not enamoured with the shock absorbers setup, doesn't seem quite right bit bouncy bit under damped?

Interested to hear from any other owners about the two last points..

It might be worth put yours on a dyno mine was booked as 534 but on 3 different dyno s produced 576,578 and 581 so you might have close to the new cars power anyway. The piggy back box on mine has transformed the performance and is a great addition.

I am happy with the dampers on mine for most driving and the sport settings are great on he track but very fast on a bad surface there is done rebound but it's hard to get a car right on all surfaces in the UK.

The gear box in manual is crap. Rebellion do a plug an play tcu map that reportably speeds the change up but also lifts the torque limiter. The quicker change is tempting but I have nearly 1000nm and I am a little worried it may be undrivable.

What I don't understand about the gearbox is how it can be proper good and quick in sport+ auto, but in manual it's dog slow? That doesn't make any sense. If it can change that fast in auto it should be fine to do it in manual. Clearly some deliberate or unintended software issue going on here.

To be fair the box in sport+ makes manual a bit pointless anyway as the downchanges are very well timed and pretty clever all around. Would just be good to be able to slam those changes home manually actuated..

I forgot the biggest issue I have with the car, and that's even when you are in sport+ mode, the car is always in too high a gear, so for example, when I'm in sport+ I'd like it to cruise one gear lower, like most cars do, but the SL doesn't do this, so it's not got very good throttle response when you want to poke it. You need to properly prod it to make it pick up. A bit annoying.

Will have to check out your car at a meet in the future, I've resisted modifying mine so far.. lol
