Hello all
Just bought a SLC 250d AMG. Car was fine driving home but stopped off and when tried to put it in to D or R it keeps going into N. Tried everything but only goes back to N. Has anyone on the forum got any ideas what's wrong? Car has had to be taken back to dealer on a flat bed, I'm gutted 😫. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Foot on the brake? Won’t go to D or R without.

Thanks for the reply. Yes tried everything. Checked brake lights as seen fuse can cause problems. Pumped brakes, turned off, locked, opened, tried again but just goes into N every time

Presumably when you say 'back to dealer', it wasn't back to the dealer you bought it from?

Yes. Private seller tbh. But in fairness he arranged to have it collected. I'm just hoping it's nothing serious because the car is absolutely stunning

It’s a beauty.
I can’t think of anything that would cause it to go into neutral though. Be interesting to hear what the cause is.

Thanks, we absolutely love her. I was just hoping that someone on the forum may have had a similar problem in the past. I Googled it and can't find anything

Could it be rain water causing issue? This happened when stopped off whilst raining heavy Saturday. Dealer has called this morning and gear shift is working again. Car has had chance to dry out so could it be water getting in somewhere? Any ideas anybody?

One would hope that there is a stored fault code. Has the dealer checked, or just observed that it's working ok now and gone no further?

He rang this morning and said car is driving again but I think he is going to check the key. It seems a coincidence that now it's dried out in the workshop it's OK again. The dealer is scratching his head tbh as they can't see an immediate problem. Hopefully, as you say a fault will show.

Thanks for the reply. Can I ask should the gearbox be serviced? She's done 64k miles, I have the print out of service history but there's nothing about the gearbox/transmission. As you can tell, this is my first MB and very green!

The 7G+ and 9G automatic transmissions are due ATF and filter change every 5 years or 77,500 miles, whichever comes first. What model year is the car?

Thanks for the reply. She's a 2017 SLC 250d AMG Line, 9 Gtronic.

So the transmission service is due this year, 2022. Has the car had the annual service yet for this year? If not, then you should get it serviced and the transmission service will be done as part of the annual service for this year. But obviously the immediate issue will need to be resolved first.

Great, thanks for that. Service A was done Jan 2022 so transmission service clearly overdue then. Last service was 387 days overdue too but wasn't concerned as can see it had basic service done. I'll let the dealer know when he calls. Thanks again

That depends on when the car was first registered. It could be that the services weren't carried out at exactly 12 months intervals, for example a service may have been done sooner due to high mileage in a certain year, or delayed in 2020 due to COVID, etc.

The point is that transmission service is due 'every 5 years', and not 'on the 5th service'. So it's possible that the car was first registered in late 2017, and therefore the transmission service wasn't deemed as due yet when the last service was carried out in January 2022. It will therefore be due with the January 2023 service.

Just a possibility...

Ok thanks for that. Car registered 31/03/2017 so you may be right. Just hoping it's nothing major. Dealer should call back later after key has been read, hopefully with the problem diagnosed. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Dealer has called said no fault but gearbox is a '2 stage click' he said we need to push lever so 2 clicks are heard otherwise it stays in N. Is this right?

From memory that is right. A small ‘resistance’ and then slightly more to go into drive or reverse.

Thank goodness, that's reassuring. Here I was panicking, thank you. We are going to take her in to MB and get transmission serviced anyway and check her over. Thanks to everyone who replied. She's on her way home :)
