I have a R170 and in the WIS for special maintenance it mentioned using sliding oil on the rubber corners of the vario roof. What is this sliding oil? Multipurpose oil or silicon paste/spray?

I believe it is a special oil/grease that you get form MB [they gave me some for free] that is used to treat the rubber seals on the roof so they don't creak. It comes in a very small bottle with a long applicator nozzel and is like clear gel. It is very greasy and doesn't wash off so don't get it on anything you don't want it on. Matt

I went to the parts department of MB and they said don't know. He said the service people quoted what is required from the computer. Eventually he got the part number for it. It costs £40 for a tube of silicon paste. Then one of the service man shouted at me to buy silicon spray from Halfords. I asked him can I use multipurpose oil. He said no, it will damage the rubber. Today I sprayed some silicon on the rubber and then noticed a crack the windscreen about 9 inches. I am not sure whether using the silicon spray cracked the windscreen or it already cracked orginated from a stone chipped on the windscreen.

They quoted for the wrong stuff, it should be this per the WIS, about £15.00

Can this be used on sunroof?

The best thing for sun roofs and the channels is either Silicon or PTFE both from good tool shops.

Unlike WD40 that smells horible its clean and long lasting.

The PTFE spray is the better, it will help stop rust and does not dry

AFAIK you can use it pretty much anywhere, it comes with a warning though about being un-paint-overable. On my SLK I use it on the roof & door seals and on the hinghes & pivots of the roof mechanism, bonnet stay pistons and so on.

Its very good stuff.

That 3 times more than what I paid for silicon spray at Halfords at £3.99 but less than half for the wrong silicon paste I was quoted at £40 plus VAT. This is better than the spray because it will not spill over the paintwork. I noticed the spilled silicon on the paintwork make it look luster and wondering whether it bad for the paintwork?

It will not harm the paint at all,,I have fixed many a sun roof with it.. when using it on rubbers spray some in to the lid and wipe it on with your finger, your normal car polish will wipe it away

roof lube

Hi I was advised to use a silicone spray lube on the the top of the windscreen where the roof connects to and also all of the rubbers around the quarter lights.
I also apply to all of the boot lid hinges inside.
