SLK n SNOW :-(

Winter tyres have changed a lot in the past few years and the newer types wear a lot better than the old oil softened ones.

But remember this: you need 4mm of tread on a winter tyre for it to work effectively on snow. Below that the grip tails off hugely which is why in Austria your expensive Michelin Pilot Alpins will be rated as summer tyres if they have 3.9mm of tread and thus illegal to use on roads where winter tyres are mandatory. (Hence the 4mm wear bars on winter tyres)

Summer tyres on snow are at a huge disadvantage and if a bit worn really do become next to useless

If you are planning to invest in some winter tyres I can recommend Nokian WR's as they are suitable to UK winter as it rarely snows but the tyres cope well with snow and grip better in the cold.

Are they any good in the summer too? Or does one need to run two sets of rears?

If they are not good to run on my car in the summer - what "summer" tyre gives the best "winter" perfomance ? I am currently running Continental ContacSports

No you need two complete sets of tyres. Running winters rears with summer fronts may give more drive traction in the snow but what you do not get is braking and cornering!

In "normal" wet/dry conditions having fronts/rears with very different friction behaviours can produce a disaster waiting to happen.

All Weather tyres such as the Nokian All Weather Plus or Goodyear Eagle Vector may be worth considering for year round use if you do not want to run two sets

ALL THANKS FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS!!

after a lot of research by E19 ADE I now have 4 new all weather tyres!! WOOHOO!!! toyo T1Rs and will not try driving in snow until I have a bit more experience on the roads also as we only get snow a few days a year not worth getting snowy tyres.

I noticed earlier this year when we had snow the ML accelerated like an animal in the snow but really didn't want to stop.:o
A little decieving as you think you have loads of traction having 4wd but for stopping you have the same as a 2wd car.
