With every day that passes I find myself thinking of replacing my 07 v6 with a pre "56" v6, I'm unhappy about paying so much RFL...

and I can't decide whether I want a CLK (don't know where to start with these but I do like the look of the sport trim).

or

Do I go back to an SLK, my previous SLK was a 200.. underpowered in my view.. and the fact it was a manual was a frustration too..so a nice Benitoite or Jasper SLK350 with heated seats, COMAND and preferably airscarf on a 55 plate would be ideal..

or do I stick it out and stop thinking the grass is greener.

Sorry Jon I have not owned any of the Mercedes you mention.

Is it possible to hire an SLK350 with all the toys you mention for weekend say?

That way you can test the grass before you buy the meadow.

Nice idea.. a possibility :)

Can't really help on which to choose as I've never even driven a CLK, so I'm likely to be a little biased.

Two points on the VED issue, though: there is speculation that this week's budget could see an end to the band K concession for cars registered before 23 March 2006, which would mean that all pre-facelift SLK 350s would then fall into band L (£415). However, the facelift SLK 350s (mid-2008 onwards) actually fall within the current band K (£245) - proivded they have the 7G auto box. Annoyingly, the six-speed manual ones remained in band L by just 2 g/km.

Here are the relevant figures, for reference:

Original SLK 350
Manual - 255 g/km
Auto - 242 g/km

Facelift SLK 350 (1 May 2009 - 30 April 2010)
Manual - 227 g/km
Auto - 219 g/km

Current SLK 350 (1 May 2010 until it's replaced by R172)
Manual - 227 g/km
Auto - 209 g/km

---------------------------

Band K - 201-225 g/km (or higher if registered before 23 March 2006)
Band L - 226-255 g/km

Are you considering a CLK cab, or coupe? If going topless, the SLK is the more fun car by some margin. Pretty well the same choice of engines. If you are thinking of a coupe though, try out a 320cdi. Extremely nice engine, and economical too. Not available in the cab unfortunately.

Coupe, I think. I fear a softtop would render too much of a temptation for the locals.

Why don't you find an mb dealer thats not too far from you & has both models in the engine sizes you are interested in then test drive both so you can decide which suits you most?

Depends what you want it for. The SLK is great fun to drive but for a long run the CLK is vastly superior. Much more comfortable. The CLK is a bit softer unless it has the optional sports pack.

I have decided my SLK 350 is the best car I have ever owned (and I have had a few !) Ok its a bit hard on the bumpy bits but its just mindblowing :bannana:

Narrow your choice, do you want a 2 seater SLK, or a 4 seat CLK with a large boot, rear seats that fold for long items at the DIY store etc.

A 2 seater is always nice to have if you have the luxury of other cars to use, the CLK is great at being a sports coupe & a very useable everyday car.

I'm biased because that was pretty well the options I was considering at the end of last year, and I went for the CLK. One of the things that persuaded me was a friend having a SLK200 as a courtesy car, moaning about the economy, and then taking it back and demanding something else after only two days. I was thinking about a 350, which would have been worse fuel economy still.

The CLK really is a very nice car for the money. My wife was not impressed with the idea of a two-door, but after driving it for a couple of months, she is now convinced and actually prefers it to our previous e-class.

Thats odd - I regularly got around 34mpg in mine. (a 54 plate R171)

The £200 extra RFL is not really a deal breaker, think of the cost of change/depreciation. Its a drop in the ocean, enjoy what you have. Or buy an SLK55 so at least you emit more CO2 for your high tax.

The wife has a CLK320Sport, very nice car and comfortable enough but not as good as the E320Sport I recently parted with. I found the SLK just too small for me but my SL gives me the room, the comfort of my E Class and the sex apeal of Cheryl Cole. Not to everyones liking but good enough for me!

Oh I dont know, top off and 5L of grunt through my tail pipe - music to my ears!
