SLK windscreen wipers

Have not driven my slk for a few months and the windscreen wipers will not work, fuse is fine, they have moved perhaps half an inch a few times so they are now about a quarter way up the screen but stuck. I have applied WD40 at the joint.

Any suggestions of how to fix please?

On the R171 there is an inhibit switch on the bonnet catches so that the wipers won't operate with the bonnet open. If the car's been stood for some time and you opened/closed the bonnet it's possible that this may have stuck? Worth a check?
