SLK200 airbag deployment

SLK200
Hi folks, my first post here.

I test drove a 2005 (R171) SLK200 manual last week. Overall it seemed a good car, I only noticed one thing; the SRS light was illuminated on the dash. He said it was a common fault and could have it turned off. I was interested so I arranged to revisit two days later in better light with hopefully no rain for a better inspection.

On the day of my second inspection the owner called me to say he had a problem with the car. He said whilst he'd been in it with his wife the passenger side airbag had deployed. He said the car was stationary at the time.

I'm not sure but I think he meant the airbag in the passenger seat, ill have to confirm.

He told me he'd taken it to Mercedes and they said it wasn't covered by them and he'd have to have it repaired at cost. He told me he was taking the car somewhere else to be repaired.

Ok so is this a known issue? I've done some research online and I've seen some people with similar issues but all the threads seem to be in the US. Also what would have to be done to repair this? New airbag of course but what else? Would it be worth me making him a low offer and getting it repaired myself? I've told him to call me after he has it fixed but what do you think? Should I buy the car at all even if he has it fixed? Car looked very straight with low 65k on a 2005 car with full service history and some bills etc.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like it had a fault that the system has detected but the seller chose to ignore resulting in this problem. What else have they ignored? If its the side airbag might not be too bad to fix. If its the main passenger bag then it will probably need a new dashboard.

Welcome to the forum. For me, walk away, plenty more cars out there with no faults. Airbags going off at random and its being fixed by his mate. Its a resounding no for me.

Oh and by the way go for a 2.3 not a 2.0. Much more fun and far more reliable. The 2.0 has a single timing chain which can stretch the 2.3 is a double chain which is sound as a pound.

The worry is not the cost of repair... but why did it go off in the first place?

SRS issues causing the SRS light to come on are indeed common, but they range from a simple issue with the loom connector under the passenger seat to a new SRS ecu, so the severity and repair costs vary widely.

But accidental deployment...? I have not heard of this before in the UK and it is quite dangerous and can cause injury.

Avoid...

I wonder if the garage has been trying to fix it , and didn't have the battery disconnected or somehow caused a spike which has triggered it ? and he's giving you a story ?

Never heard of one deploying for no reason other than people trying to fix it while still powered up.

If its the seat bag ( does a 170 SLK have a seat bag ? ) it'll need a new seat cover , if it's the door bag , it'll need a new door trim , if it's the dash , then it'll need a new dash , none of these are cheap if you do take a chance and buy it.

Personally , as others have said , airbag faults with 'mates' fixing them would make me leave this one , the world isn't short of SLK's , there'll be another nice one along soon.

Thanks so far for the replies. The car is the later R171

I don't think his mate is fixing it, I think he means a local garage that he uses usually for his cars.

Yeah I've struggled to find an example of this on UK searches so it seems its unusual. I did read on a US site that a sensor failure can cause the bags to deploy after hitting a pothole.

Someone mentioned the other model as being better, is it that much faster? How does it compare in mpg? I'm buying this car as my daily runner some I'd like it to be fairly decent on mpg. I know the 350 is really bad on fuel inn comparison. I want a bit of power but just enough for enjoying a daily drive. I have a Porsche 911 Turbo for when I want to go fast.

Not sure on the MPG difference between the 2.0 and the 2.3 probably not a lot. Seeing as you have a 911 Turbo for fun just go with your gut I would say.

TJ: I didn't think the 230K engine was available in the R171. From what I see the 200K came in 2 states of tune, 160bhp and 180bhp.

Had a photo of the car from the seller. Turns out it was the driver's seat airbag that deployed

Yes he called me earlier and I told him I'm passing on the car.
