After the recent change of my Father in laws car, we are now looking for a replacement for my Mother in laws Corsa.

We feel that she should have an Automatic this time, so we were looking at the Corsa, Polo, Honda Jazz and the Toyota Yaris.

This morning I thought about the Smart for four, what are these cars like in terms of ease of use and most importantly reliability.

The budget is around is £5k-£6k.

Many thanks

I love mine but no room for dog in the boot and rapidly growing small person (plus buggy etc) so it's for sale! Not sure if it's what your MIL would be looking for though as it's been tuned :)

Mine is a 95bhp (red i on cdi badge) and has 50,000 miles on the clock and is semi-auto (full auto is push lever to left) there were issues with these boxes but it seems to be software related and updates have sorted mine.

My workshop manager has a 1.3 semi-auto with 80,000 on the clock.

Gav has had a drive shaft need replacing but I think that's due to pot holes rather than anything else. Mine had a few bits whilst under warranty - rear shocks and a wheel bearing spring to mind. But generally good cars and nothing too major!

We will be looking for a low mileage, auto and preferably from a main dealer so we get a full warranty.

Regards servicing can they be looked after any Mercedes dealer or just specific smart dealerships?

What things should be looked out for and what is the best model to buy and options to have or to be avoided?

Many thanks

Has to be Smart service centre, but you'll find that many MB dealers are Smart Servicing Centres even if they don't sell them!

1.3 petrol is a nice car, 45 mpg easy and 95bhp so not too sluggish either :) Passion spec with glass roof, fog lights, height adjustable drivers seat and AC. Comfort pack added electric mirrors and rear windows and a 'twin face' arm rest. Stereos are from A-classes as is switch gear so familiar and common.

Not knowing what kind of driving your MIL does it's hard to be more specific but I am known as a Smart Geek so ask away!

The Smart forfour Passion 1.3 was my first car and I have nothing anything bad to say about it. As what lil.smartie says it is loaded with good specs and it is definately a worthy car to get.

Unfortunately, they dont make them anymore and I do think they are a little hard to get with the right colours.

As you may know I am a Smart specialist too. The For Four is a mitsubshi really and is a bl00dy good little car. Very reliable and cheap to run.

Different diagnostics & with the semi-auto it likes proper clutch adjustments and software updates that only a Smart software'd Star can do!

Just checked and there is not a Smart Dealer in Dundee, but there is one in Perth which is not far away.

We have a 1.3 Passion and it is a great little car in many ways. The gearbox and clutch have been changed, but apart from that, if you can live with very bouncy suspension then go for it. That said, I used to have a Jazz and that is an astonishing car.

The Smart dealer in Perth is John R Weir. However Weirs also have a Mercedes dealership in Dundee which may be able to service it.
