mercedes c220cdi auto
Hi,
I am new to Mercedes, and bought a 2002 220 cdi auto for my wife, i have had a few issues with it since i bought it, firstly it would cut out and show Epc light on dash, i seemed to have cured it by cleaning the MAF, and changing the filters.
However, i still have a smokey exhaust, not sure of the colour, but black/blue?, i have a dodgy thermostat, as reading only 60 Degrees on a run, will this cause the smoke?
I cleaned the EGR, but it didn't help.
Any advice would be gratefully received, no dealer close to me to get the codes read.
Thanks

Have the injectors tested on MB Star and then send off any found faulty for repair.

when my vag did this was normally under acceleration, so used a couple of tanks of 'expensive' diesel, a few good italian tune ups and after that 'cheap' diesel + millers port and was all ok. was found to be soot build as previous owner didn't drive it correctly for a diesel. May be same, but as noted get it fault coded and take from there.

Thanks, the previous owner had it 8 years, and if correct only did 4k a year, fingers crossed.
Would i be better to use a diesel purge? IE, fill up new fuel filter with the stuff and run it through, or is there a better way?

One of the injectors is not working properly and, hence the smoke and the rail pressure causing the EPC and the cutting out.

It needs a leak off test.

sorry, i'm no mechanic by any stretch the imagination.
i learnt how to remove the egr on my vag and it was caked solid of soot which when cleared helped but the other stuff cleared the pipes and was much better after.
i never had issues with pulling power or acceleration - it just wasn't what a clean car should have done!

60 degrees is too low, you should be reaching at least 80+ degrees when fully warmed up.........I would renew the thermostat and then give the car a really good blast using full revs in low gears to blow out accumulated soot that has built up in the exhaust system during the previous years of low mileage (expect lots of black smoke when doing this which should eventually reduce).

Check you don't have piston blow-by. Is there much crankcase pressure at idle with the oil filler cap removed ?
Is there oil staining around the dipstick outlet and oil filler neck ?
Is there too much pressure when you remove the rocker vent pipe ?
If there is, then your rings and/or cylinder bores are worn and you'll have reduced cylinder compression - and possibly too little pressure to achieve full combustion ... evident as a sooty exhaust and engine dieselling/pinking/knocking.

Well just back from a garage to have the thermostat changed, now i have a warm cabin!, spoke to him about the smoke, he put it on a diagnostic machine and turbo boost sensor fault came up, is this the MAP sensor, or is there another one? location on the engine would be great if you could post a picture, thanks everyone.
