I have been looking to replace my mini for a while, phase one of this is complete, as the mini is now sold.

I am looking at getting a convertible and I like the SLs and the XK8s and i am liking the prices too.

I like the 90s SL and they seem to be cheap as do all the big V8s etc,

Can you fit small children in the back of the sl? They are 4 and 7.

Or should i be looking towards something else?

You can fit two small children in the back of an SL but not totally legally as the bucket seats wont allow for any kind of booster seat which is now a legal requirement.

In addition, they are fitted with only lap belts rather than three point belts in the rear so not ideal.

As for the bottom end of the R129 market, you may well find a bargain out there but all of the ones I have seen under 5k have needed significant money throwing at them to bring them up to scratch. Dont forget on a car like the one in your link a simple roof problem could cost as much as the purchase price to put right.

From the legal side of things I would probably be better off with an XK then, plus they have 3 point belts, and I would prefer the peace of mind that that gives

M-B spent millions on safety when developing the R129 (the pop-up roll bar was reputed to cost more than the rest of the project put together). The rear seats were specifically designed as child seats so I'm happy enough to stick our kids in the back on an occasional basis. Incidentally not all R129s have back seats - they were a cost option on some models, and you couldn't have them with the Bose sound option.

The XK is a nice car but the non-retracting hood really puts me off - it looks like a pram when its folded down :o

I see your point, how much room do your kids have when in the back.

I should have thought plenty enough room until they're about 12.

A lot depends how tall the driver is! I'm 6'1" and normally have the driver's seat right back (as far as it will go), so I need to move it forward to have even a small child sitting behind me. Works OK but I wouldn't want to do a long drive like that.

The front passenger seat can easily go far enough forward to take a small/medium sized adult in the back on that side. I've had my dad in the front and mum in the back like that.

Agree about clk .

I am 5'9" on a good day, and have short legs so it may be ok. I will have to take one out and see if they fit.

CLK is ok but not ....."special" enough for a toy if you get my meaning?! :dk: I dont think they did a W208 AMG Convertible did they?

According to wiki they did!
The CLK AMG is powered by a hand-assembled 5.4-liter V8 engine. The hardware list reads like that of a race car: super-stiff forged billet steel crankshaft, forged, weight-matched connecting rods and pistons, lightweight AMG-specific chain-driven single overhead camshafts V8 (one cam per cyl bank) with two intake and one exhaust valves per cylinder, as well as 8 coil packs and 16 spark plugs (two spark plugs per cyl). Its bore and stroke are nearly the same, which makes it an ideally balanced engine. The complex dual-resonance intake manifold with carefully tuned runners helps create optimized torque and power outputs by taking advantage of two resonate frequencies to increase performance, the engine features a high compression ratio of 10.5:1. All of these advance technologies help deliver a healthy 342 hp (255 kW) and 376 lb·ft (510 N·m) of torque.

Tony.

The seller thought the same or he is just keeping the fact that a 55 was built in 208 form to himself!
They also did a 63 in 209 form.

Tony.

I know they did a hardtop CLK55 but didnt know it came in cabrio

CLK 430 convertibles seem to be very cheap, that may hit the spot

I am sure you could get 3 point belts fitted to an R129 we have had them done in our earlier R107 SL.

The 107 is a nice car but a good one (that's not rusting away) will cost more than a decent R129.

There are a couple of people on here who have put 3-point belts in the back of an R129. Doesn't help from a legal POV though as small children would still require booster seats (a bad idea as it would lift them rather close to the roll bar).

I think the 107 is a nice enough car to look at. Not so sure about driving it. Had one for a weekend years ago and it did not thrill me.

I went for a spin in a brand new XKR last night, WOW!!!!

Just need to sell some organs now :)
