Car
2000 SL500, 2005 Touareg 5.0 V10 diesel
I am carless :(

Sold the SL60 on saturday and was quite upset about it really.
Am wondering if I'll ever own as good a car as that again (before they are banned for good.....)

Also must admit I'm going a bit wobbly on an SUV due to concerns over resale in a few yrs when they will cost more to tax than to buy........so I'm just depressed now.

anyone want to hazard a guess at what I got for the car??? :D
Haven't got a clue, but if it were me, then the 211 55AMG estate would be the ultimate family car. It can be used as the daily commute machine, oodles of space for anything the average family demanded, plus power!!!!

The new bigger AMG 211 estate has even more get up and go.

Failing that the C320CDI

Regards
John

by the way I sold the car to Andrew Stansfield of Cheshire Classic Benz

www.classic-benz.co.uk

He has a lovely collection of old mercs in superb condition and is a thoroughly decent chap.
I am hoping he keeps track of the ownership of "my" car so I may get the chance to buy it back one day.

So is he selling it through Saffron Cars, or were they selling it before?

regarding SUVs - did u see the headline of the Times today?

they had it on sale or return on the off chance of catching some mug punter with a city bonus burning a hole in their pocket.......sadly, it didn't happen.
they are nothing to do with CCB

No, but it was on the news last night that sales of 4x4 are down due to public awareness and taxation worries.

Best avoided if you dont want to take a massive hit.

I'm sure you're right, but the AMG (any AMG) is undoubtedly in the same CO2 band as any SUV.
It won't just be SUVs that take the hit value-wise......
Will be interesting to see exactly what Brown announces today.

Knowing Classic Benz they'll add £5k to the window price. How much did it go for then? £24k?

I don't begrudge the dealers making a decent margin. I got £23k for it and was very pleased, particularly as it was a fairly quick and painless process.
It cost me £25K last august.

The key to good selling is to set your expectations at a reasonable level.
Given that R230 SL500s are now rapidly approaching £30K second hand, I knew that I would struggle to achieve much more than I did for mine, without striking very lucky.
The depn on the car for me was very reasonable over the 16 months of ownership (£125/month), and that was a key reason that I bought the car in the first place.
It wasn't "real depreciation", just dealer margin that I suffered.

Whatever I buy now will, sadly, cost me several times more in depn.

What cars are on the short list at the moment - tax worries aside?

Steering off topic - this taxation you speak of - is this for new cars only or is there a year of manufacture this will aplly from?

Not sure but isn't it anything covered by the CO2 emission regulations. i.e. a vehicle that is too old to fall under the new classifications won't be covered.

A quick check revealed this date.

Cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 based on CO2 emissions and fuel type.

I seriously considered Nick's car, but sadly couldn't justify the cost to upgrade from my SL500 at the moment (we're about to exchange contracts on a house etc.). Glad to hear it went for a decent price.

Buy sensibly and R129s are a very good bet at the moment. Whilst the R230 is coming down in price the R129 should settle and you'll see the same thing that happened with the prices of R107s when people realise 'they're not made like they used to be'.

I'm not even considering an R230 - the build quality is pants for want of a better word. The only thing that would make me live with that is an SL55.

The roof on the R230 leaks and it creates a horribly flimsy boot mechanism. I'm not sure the convenience warrants a boot full of water. I also actually like the 'ceremonial' removal and fitting of the hard top on mine.

I plan on selling my R129 in the new year - more than likely for another R129 - I have looked around and the depreciation on other models is worrying.

touareg 5l diesel
cayenne 4.5 v8
anything else with a bloody great engine that pumps vast quantities of death gas (as Gordon Brown will no doubt start calling it soon) aka CO2 into the atmosphere and can carry my family around in safety and comfort.

Get the toureg and then remap it :D

Did you see it on Fifth Gear on Monday pulling a 150 odd ton plane?
