Solenoid Valve Leaking Oil

Hi,

I have a C180 from 2001 which has done 53000 miles. 10 days ago, the engine light came on and my local mercedes dealer said that the solenoid valve has been leaking oil into the camshaft and needs a LOT of stuff replacing and gave me a bill for over £2500!!!

Not being content, I have looked around and it seems that this is a fairly common problem with some mercedes cars models.

Am I right? Is there a way of finding out how common and if this is a recognised problem with the car?

Am I right in thinking this is not a wear and tear issue?

I greatly appreciate any help with this matter.
