Some advice please: SL280

For £15k it has to be worth a look... you could even make money if it ticks all the right boxes.

Amazing how these things have changed. The legendary Steve McQueen Ford Mustang in what many see as the greatest car chase (in the film Bullitt) was a V8 and had 5.7 litres. It had a top speed of 115 and a 0-60 time of 10.8 seconds. Virtually identical to my A class (A180cdi 2 litre diesel). But they are all fun to drive.

Are you sure about this? The car in Bullitt was a '68 390 GT running 320 hp from factory (and they often used to underestimate these figures) which was a high output 6.4 litre.

Being pedantic, but I did seriously consider buying one of these in a weak gone in 60 seconds moment.

My figures come from classic car magazines and relate to the 5.7 litre V8 Ford Mustang.

Funnily enough, saw the Bullitt film again on TCM last night. What a car chase? What a good movie too.

Hi Emily, I am new here having just bought a 280SL. My experience if it helps is that I took less notice of the exact model and spec but looked for a car that was genuine and towards the high end of the price range to reflect that it was of better quality. My 95 cost £6,300 a few weeks back. I did a general checkover and then took it 2,200 miles through France. on the way down it never dropped below 100mph (constable) and ran for a good portion at 120 without problem. Everything works exactly as it did when new and no rust, damp etc.

I have been lucky enough to have a range of cars from E. type, various mercs and Porsche through Subaru STi and currently Touareg so think have a fair balanced view. My opinion is that it is supposed to be a pretty, easy to live with sports car. It is nicely balanced with more than adequate performance. Apologies alround but having owned a 500SEC, whilst the power was magnificent you rarely used it and if a problem occured then its engine out time!

Hope this helps. John.
