Hi everyone

i have pioneer TS-E171Ci components powered by a pioneer GM-D8604 and 14 gauge speaker cable.

when i turn the volume up past 30 (0-50 range) my mids break up.

can anyone give me some advice as what i can do to avoid the awful sound when its turned up. would a new amplifier or new speakers help?

chris

What do you mean by break up?

Do you mean they distort or cut out or something else?

Yeah I think it's called clipping, they distort. I'm happy with the tweeters they are really good but the midst don't seem to have a lot of meat in them

I'm not an expert but from what I remember, clipping is normally when the signal is not getting through in its fullest form and causes distortion.

Distortion is normally caused by an amp or speakers being overdriven.

You will burn out the voicecoil if it carries on too long.

Mids will need more current to drive them over tweeters but nothing like a woofer or even subwoofer.

What rating is the amp and what type / how many / what rating are the speakers being driven from it (in RMS, not meaningless PMPO / Music Power ratings!)?

John is exactly right.
If you could put a scope on there, you would see the ‘flats’ at the top and bottom of the waveform.
Either a new, more poweful amp, or more efficient speakers.
Of course, a new amp might show up the inadequacies of the existong speakers.
And head unit
And cabling...

You haven't mentioned how the system is configured - I presume they're driven by a pair of channels, with the other channels driving another set of speakers or bridged for a sub.

Either way, you're almost certainly overdriving the speakers, the amp is specified for 100W RMS per channel and the speakers are only rated for 60W. (It doesn't help that there's myriad conventions of power measurement used by the manufacturers).

It sounds like you have the gain set too high on the amp...assuming it is adjustable.

Thanks everyone, I will look into it and see if I can adjust it
