Hi all
Can any one give me an idea as to the max power of the door speakers in a facelifted w211 as i am looking to upgrade them with a 5 channel amp and then add a sub. As I feel the sound is pretty good but lacking dynamic range due to the lack of power from the rear gateway and then add a small sub to give the bottom end the door speakers cannot produce

Thanks

I wouldn't worry about the rated power. It's not very relevant. More power means more headroom. Just buy a good 5-channel amp like a Genesis or DLS and have it installed properly with decent power & speaker cable

Having an amp with filters would be useful to roll off the low end for the door speakers if you are planning to fit a sub. You'll find the door speakers will play louder & cleaner if you remove the frequencies they struggle with. Try a 120 Hz highpass filter on the speakers and a 100 Hz lowpass on the sub

Have a look at secondhand stuff on Talkaudio

Thanks Nick

i was planning on dropping in a Audio control 2xs crossover in the preamp side as well which will give a high pass of 80hz for the main speakers and then a low pass the other way for the sub but it also has a subsonic filter built in set for around 20hz so you dont waste power getting the bass into the car trying to play frequencies which you cant hear

You're extremely unlikely to get anything sub-20Hz off a CD, cassette or radio anyway. Or sub-40 Hz for that matter

I burnt a set of test tones on a CD once and tried it in my car. Even with a sub there's precious little happening till you get above 50 Hz, whatever anyone claims. When you get to about 100 Hz you get lots of "cabin gain" and a big woofly peak in the response
