Having recently bought a 2007 E280 with full history which has only done about 2500 miles in the past year, the ASSYST is saying it's well overdue it's next service (which is IMHO one of the disadvantages of these time based systems when cars aren't used for a long period).

I've read many tales of woe as regards Greenoaks, so anyone recommend a good independent around Reading who would be a better bet, especially as I simply want to get everything normalised now the car is back to doing a normal sort of mileage?

Please forgive the new thread, but I need to get my post count up!:)

Hi... I live in Basingstoke and make the well worth trip down to Horndean to PCS... they do all my work and are very well respected on here!!

Quick web search on "specialists" closer to Reading where I am reveal John Griffiths and Reading Mercedes Service. Anyone had any experience of these two?

Another vote for PCS from me too. My brother-in-law uses Star in Caversham and is happy with them.

Thanks guys. Gives me a couple of places to start me off!

Hi Neil

Do you happen to have a spare wheel (standard size) for my 1995 E320 coupe.

I tried STAR for my last service. They were pleasant enough and I think did the work required at a pretty reasonable price. But....they (the young chap there) diagnosed failed NSR wheel bearings as rubbing trim on the wheel arch which necessitated another trip to the dealer to have the bearings confirmed and replaced.

I was quite surprised, given their reputation. Perhaps they couldn't be bothered to check it properly as I'm not a regular customer?

Did you ask them for an explanation?

When I collected the car, they assured me that they had road-tested it and that the noise had gone. On collection, it was apparent once I got going that it had not, but I had no time to go back - delayed passengers get very grumpy.

When I called to book it back in, I was pretty-well fobbed off with 'can't fit it in till next week', so I went elsewhere.

Incidentally, MB Swindon dropped their price by £55 just by asking for a discount, and gave me a brand new E250 for 2 nights while they had the car.

Hello Hi flyer, I am sorry you were not satisfied with your last visit to us, we try our hardest to please all our customers new and old and it seems that we failed you in this instance. I cannot comment on the noise, but I will make steps to speak to the technicians to see why it was missed diagnosed. As you know we are very busy and sometimes are unable to book cars in for a week or so, unless it is an emergency which we always fit in. If you are willing to give us another try in the future, I will offer some discounts to compensate for our shortfall. Regards Ian.

Ian, thanks for the offer. I was genuinely impressed by the level of service and feedback you gave on the car, and felt I got value for money on the bits you did (after the initial shock of an £850 bill!!). I just felt a little fobbed off with the not-so-straightforward issue; in hindsight I should have brought this to your attention directly, not via the forum. Now residing in the west country but still schlepping up to Heathrow so will get in touch directly should I happen to be Reading way when the next service is due.
