For a campervan conversion I am looking to upgrade the existing 180A alternator to a 250A version. Is this a straight swap mechanically (will piggy back thicker cable to starter battery if required) or is there software in the ECU that needs to be updated with the larger alternator information?

Thanks

180A sounds like a significant output anyway.

Are you fitting more and / or larger capacity batteries?

The 180A alternator is not even standard equipment on newly manufactured Sprinters, 200A is. There is a factory fitted 250A option for a shade under £1000.
Yes, I am installing LiFePO4 leisure batteries and need all the Amps I can get. The battery to battery charger (B2B) will draw 70 Amps, ideally I would like to install two B2B...

I have never fitted a B2B charger so unsure of them, but why will it draw 70 amps, what sort of battery needs charging at that rate ?

70 Amps is the specification of the b2b charger (Sterling BB122470). The battery bank is 300 Ah lithium.

Back to the initial question: Does the vehicle software need to be updated with the details of the new, larger alternator size?

Is the current (!) alternator water cooled?

I would expect a 250 A unit to be.
