My mechanic says that he is wary of these as he reckons they often don't fit properly and he's not keen on the acoustics - is any body else of the same opinion?

I have to agree with your mechanic,i have a stainless system on my Clk and i hate it.
The noise is a lot louder than the standard system and becomes unbearable when it gets hot.

I say change your mechanic :)
I love my system, it is quiet when constant speed and rumbles when beans given.
If your system will be done by bloke who don't know what is what then outcome will be a disaster.
I always use CKS performance in Watford - very good
Next time will defo go to Berlin and will use SIM performance - those guys are wizards !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not on a Mercedes but my Corvette has a stainless exhaust and it booms at certain revs, most annoyingly at 70mph in top. I don't think even Chevrolet sell them like that!

I thought you had a stainless exhaust made to your requirement isn't that was the point. If its noisy more fool you for asking for it.

I've been told s/s exhausts are often made from thinner gauge metal as corrosion is much less of a consideration than on mild steel and this makes the droning/booming that owners complain about regardless of the internal baffling.

A decent fabricator will ask what you require and make that for you. You get what you pay for, pay peanuts get monkeys

Don't quite go along with that train of thought my backbox was 500 euros and the rest of the system was custom made in Glasgow at a cost of £200.
I have been told the back box is very good quality, the only way to quieten it down is to goto a standard system.

But if you had asked for a quite system when you bought it surely that's what you would have got. The trade off for less back pressure i.e. possible power gains is increased noise.

Just a tip.
Brabus makes systems in similar prices as s/s hand made.
Check ebay.de lots of great deals there

I put one on the CLK and removed it, even after extensive mods and tweaks by the fabricator the car never felt right. Bought a Brabus one from Germany (which it had on originally and lasted 14years) and it made a massive difference car back to perfect and revving much more freer again. I also have a stainless one on the audi and it's been nothing but trouble and this is from the leading fabricator and manufacturer in the UK who do all the Subaru OEM stuff. Some cars just aren,t suited to SS exhausts and it looks like I have two of them

Unless its a race car stick to OEM or as pointed out plenty of good deals on be had on German ebay and through some German motorsport outfits.

Small engines don't like s/s as well. Got to have some horses to spit exhausts properly :)

I'd listen to Flania personally , he knows his stuff. ;)

Suspect his Audi has a bit more power than you might think ;)

My S124 had SS mid and rear sections when I got it and they were very poor, accoustically and technically.

I'm sure it's possible to get a good one but I'd be wary too.

Exhausts are far more of a science than most people realise.... Stick to Brabus / Eisenmann / Kleeman and you will pay lots but get quality - buy a 200-500 quid box / system and it will always be cheap in more than just price.

Had Eisenmann Race rear box with the oem system (minus centre box) on my old CLK 430 sounded exactly as I wanted.

Be warned - 4cyls have a habit of booming especially the MB supercharged 4's not sure why they in particular do but my C230K coupe always sounded farty even on the stock system.

Nice car.

I would replace it with an MB original. You'll still be enjoying it in 10 years.

Yes, that was my impression but I've not been in the market for one previously and was surprised by the mechanics comment, hence the post.

Cheers Ray.

That's exactly what my mechanic said.
