It's time to replace the Michelin Pilot Primacy G1s on my W211. I've been told that the Pilot Primacy has been replaced by the Primacy HP. I assume that the newer Primacy HP doesn't have the rim protector that comes with the G1. Any thoughts on whether I should switch to the newer HPs or hunt around for a set of the Pilot Primacy G1s?

Just go for HP. I was told they were 'better' and they do seem to be quieter and maybe more fuel efficient and wearing better as well.

Replaced all four Pilots in past three months with HP's and no problems - seem slightly noiser on Motorways than Pilots but smoother if that makes sense - suspect that is down to totally different tread pattern between the two - looking forward to another 34000 miles from these

Hope this helps

My car came new with Continentals. At 21k the pair that spent life mostly on the rear were replaced with Primacy HP and the pair from the front at 28k.

The rear set were replaced at 51k with another set of HP and the ones on the front are still going strong. Current mileage is 56k.

Grip seems better than the Continentals but then I tend not to throw the W211 around like a sports car. :)

Odd that. My rears seem to last 15k and fronts about 40...

Been using Dunplop SP2000, currently trying Nexen H3000 at the recommendation of my tyrefitter - very grippy and quiet but unable to comment on treadwear yet.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like it's time to move from the Pilot G1s to the Primacy HPs.

As for wear.... I only get about 18,000 miles out of a set of 4  (swapped front to rear at 9K) but I hardly do any motorway driving; it's mainly bendy country road stuff.

I check my tyre pressures once a week when stone cold using my own electric pump and accurate hand guage. Also always check pressures cold prior to one of my 1600 - 2000 mile charges in a week or so in EU working.

I always run pressures as recommended by MB on fuel cap. Never use garage air lines or guages. I think this is secret of long life from tyres together with good driving habits ( avoiding harsh braking, acceleration, cornering and so on)

I'm also meticulous about checking tyre pressures but I suspect that the cause of my high tyre wear lies here ;)

My experience of Dunlop tyres (not on MB cars) was that they had good grip but wore out very quickly.

I had the same dilemma but wanted just the rears because the fronts were fine. I managed to find just 2 G1's with rim protectors. Reason for this post is to confirm that the Pilot Primacy has all but gone now but I would hunt around a bit first.
Try elitedirect.com as they were very helpful in my search (after ringing off with no luck Dave rang me back 5 mins later to say they'd found the 2 tyres I wanted in the warehouse - they arrived in less than 24 hours, South of England to Yorkshire. They were not really very old on the manufacturing date either).

For what its worth, my S211 runs on Michelin Pilot Alpines. I've had 50k miles out of them and there's still pleanty of tread left

"MO" tyres

Hopefully this will be my last question about these tyres. I know about the “MO” option on Primacy HPs and the Mercedes handbook says “For safety reasons, MB recommends that you only use tyres which have been specially approved ….” (but doesn’t mention any specific tyre types), so my query is whether there is any insurance exposure if I fit the non-MO tyres (which are a lot easier to find) i.e. can the insurance company say “Wrong tyres; you’re not covered”?

(I know the handbook isn’t always right. It says my car should have 225/55R16 95Vs and it came with Ws. No problems that way round but it does show some variances.)
