Hi

Does anyone know how to remove the passenger door handle assy?(230ce123-central locking)

I've removed the door card, the 3 screws retaining the door handle assy to the door, but there is a rod from the lock in the handle connecting to the mechanism inside the door and these will not seperate when pulling the handle away from the door.(The lock does not rotate with the key-suspect vandalism,so I wish to repair or replace the barrel)

Cheers Steve

lol, this hasnt come up for years...
basically the black plastic covering behind the handle (to open door from inside) comes away, so take a very small flat screwdriver and pull it out...
its hard to describe, wish i was anywhere near my 123, would take some pics.

So its
1) Large Screws holding handle on
2) 2 screws on the chrome at door latch
3) screw behind door opener
4) Remove Window winder
5) pop trim off carefully

Thanks

jay

Hi Jay

Thanks for your reply to my problem.

The steps you describe i have already carried out.The hard bit appears to be in actually seperating the handle(with lock barrel) away from the door as it remains attached due to a connecting rod between the lock barrel and the door latch mechanism located within the door.

the purpose for this is to actually change/repair the lock barrel ,as it has been vandalised and the key will not turn it.

Hi Ian

Thanks for your information about my door lock problem (ce 230 123)

Unfortunately the 124 must be different as my 123 doesn't have that type of handle assy with its barrel removal method

Cheers Steve

Thanks for the note Steve, sorry not to have been able to help.

Ian

ahh sorry, hmm have done this before, but a long time ago and cant remember the specifics... to be honest, its got to be logical, everything on the 123 is!

I know what you are referring to: even with all the screws removed the loose handle is still attached the to internal lock mechanism as if my magic. Plus, internal door access is non-exisitent!

The trick is to rotate the complete handle assembly about 180 degrees anti-clockwise-but slowly whilst watching the paint work. At the same time you need to gently move the handle away from the door skin.

This is tricky to explain...but be gentle and with perserverence the handle will separate from the lock assembly (which has a barrel into which the door handle actuator rod goes into--this is what you need to separate. God knows how they did it in the factory. )

Hi

Have just read your message -thanks for that enlightening piece of advice!I will have a further attempt at removal tomorrow morning.

I have ordered a handle assy and barrel from mercedes (£89 all in) quoting the chassis no, which will match the barrel to the original keys.

I must quote the tel.no and name(Mark Cosovitch 01792 846888) of the w123 specialist who advised me of this, even though he can sell me any amount of locks/handles from his stock of used parts

Cheers Steve

Anyone know if it's possible to swop the barrels, offside for nearside?

I have not done this..so cannot say. But it would be cheaper to manufacture one lock that can be used for both door types...so I'm guessing that it is possible.

My thinking exactly. Next time it's warm enough to spend an hour in a well-ventilated garage I shall investigate. Probably about June next year.

On my twenty-year-old coupe the co-driver's (we have co-drivers rather than passengers .. allegedly) doorlock feels as though it has been used about four times in its life and is as smooth as silk, whereas the driver's side lock is a bit, well, gritty I suppose you could say. New keys and a bit of lubrication went a good way to improving the feel, but it's still not nearly as pleasing as the other one.

Thinking further, it wouldn't be surprising if quite a lot of the handle/lock assembly wasn't interchangeable. We shall see.
