Stoopid American-isms

This thread has reminded me just how much I hate dumb, slang American-isms creeping into the English language...Especially on car forums.

Speed Zones instead of speed limits,
Part out instead of changed,
Parted out instead of swapped/exchanged
What's your Ride, instead of what car do you have,
Headers instead of manifold,
Rims instead of wheels,
Fender instead of wing,
Spun out instead of spun.

The list goes on.


We have enough poor English terms, such as calling children/kids, "Little ones/Little Man", so don't need any Amurricaan ones as well...

Not at all. It's just an observation.

I think we have a perfectly good language, which is often more descriptive and accurate than slang terms that get used, so why not use that language.

I think "rim" is okay. As in a wheel rim. And the wheel is made up of a tyre and rim together.

Thankfully terminology at work is quite standardised. Though I do sometimes he foreigners pronounce chassis as "chazzy"

Point of order: header is the metal part that spans and reinforces the forward most section of the roof, near to where the sun visor and rear view mirror hangs down.

Tyres are the rubber bits, wheels the metal bits. Rims - nope.

Dont get me started! What about rotors, guibos and "tuning" - ie fitting big "rims"

My least-favourite Dumb Britain-isms are "leathers" - aka a leather interior, punchers in your tyers, bumbers, interias, Range Rover Vouges, Citreons in general and Citreon Xnatias in particular

And, of course, the famous and ubiquitous Rouge Traders. There seems to be no end of discussion of vendors of jewellers' traditional polishing products!

One American bit of slang that I find hilarious is 'f@nny pack', which I'm told is what we call a 'bum-bag' over here.
