Hi learned friends, car is w210 e320 cdi yr 2000 .
How can i stop the clouds of thick smoke billowing out behind me , every time i accelerate hard , it stops when i get up to speed but its just embarresing , also how can i check my turbo is actually working ? it seems down on power , ive checked as far as i can tell all the pipes around the engine bay and they all look fine ,no leaks .
also should the actuater rod to the turbo move up and down if i apply pressure with my hand manually ? it does not seem to move , or maybe its supposed tpo be stiff,
my inlet flap motor arm has been disconnected and the linkage is fully forward towards the rad , im just fed up with plumes of sooty smoke every time i accelarate....

is the smoke that bad? mine gives a chuff after ive been pottering about but then it clears and remains clear.

The actuator is ment to be stiff, not sure about the inlet flaps but ive heard they an give agro which is probably why yours has been disconected.

Try running some Injector cleaner through and give it a good hard drive may help

Clean out the EGR and then do the EGR delete mod.

There's a thread by DM explaining how to DIY

thanks but tried all that , its not just a puff its thick clouds causing following cars to brake and back off ! it clears when im not accelarating and cruising along , have given it a hard drive by manually selecting 2nd gear and driving for 5 miles at 40mph ,, but still the same ...

i would love to do that but i am a total novice when it comes to mechanics , i dont even have a toolkit , i would not know how even if i followed the instructions , trust me on this ...

Isn't Alex Crow near you? Give him a call, he can fit the mod for you and advise if the EGR needs cleaning

yes he is just dwn the rd frm me , any rough idea how much you reckon for the removal of egr and delete ????

Sounds abit more serious than just a dirty egr valve if it's billowing out that badly . As for the turbo actuator if I get the handle end of a screwdriver I can push mine down relatively easily. Why did you disconnect the flap control arm was it an issue with the motor?

No, it sounds exactly like a blocked EGR...it was on mine the same until the EGR was taken off and cleaned thoroughly.

no motor works , but the arm had come off the ball joint on the linkage , and i was told to leave it uncoupled and push the linkage fully forward , making the flaps permantly open ?, i was informed they serve no real purpose and better to have them fully open

May be wrong but I was lead to believe the purpose they serve is to adjust the air flow for the fuel burn. I know when in the past my arm became disconnected the car lost power and was horrible to drive .reconnected it drives so much nicer and much better power delivery.

your maybe right but conflicting advice , i was told fully open lets more air in so not restricting and burns better, , a footnote i can guarantee my egr is coked up like an idiot up until recently owing to the job i do i was letting the car just idle for hours a day , and its only ever driven around town all slow driving .... obviously not ideal for a big diesel engine
