Hi i recently bought a Clk55 Amg 2003 and there is a strange smell coming out of the air vents. smells of a burnt smell. any help appreciated.

Might be bacterial growth on your air con system if its been sitting a while. You can get sprays to treat it yourself or an aircon specialist would be able to sort it for a small charge.

Sounds about right to me

Air con would not normally smell like burning, more musty, rotten eggs type of smell. If it deffo a burning kind of smell then it could still be related to the air con but might be something a bit more sinister and risky.

Is the heating system all working properly?

The heating works fine so deos the air con, The smell is something i have never smelt before maybe not a burning smell realy strange.

Hi could it be the pollen filter and where would i find it ? Thanks mark

might be like burnt plastic bag smell. possibly a nylon bag stuck to the exhaust and melting?

this is just an assumption. I might be wrong

This might be worth considering:

Natural products.

This might be worth considering:

My chemical interpretation of that bulletin is that bacteria are breaking down the soundproofing material which is probably of natural origin. Mercedes are using more natural plant product derived materials to aid recycling. :) :) These may contain fatty acids which are liberated by the breakdown of lipid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipids containing materials to give the strong smelling vinegar-acetic acid rancid butter-butyric acid. This may be due to incomplete raw material processing or simply an accelerated degradation in the car due to heat and damp.:( Its the early 90s wiring loom problem again but that was purely chemical in nature and didnt involve natural products.

Hi all just got back from MB garage and said it was the air con and needed 'DEBUGGING' (bacterial growth). 1 can of Air conditioning Treatment should do the trick at £30.00 inc vat. Hopefully this works & might take a few days to clear. If it works i will let you know.http://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-x-FORTE-TREATMENT-FOR-ALL-CARS-WITH-AIR-CONDITIONING_W0QQitemZ170036226243QQihZ007QQcategoryZ10374QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
That sounds a bit steep but if it does the trick then you're sorted! When I had my aircon repaired last year the mechanic took all the filters out and blasted them with the antibacterial spray, it was like driving around inside a big tin of Uncle-Joe's for a week ;)

Mmm...Uncle Joe's :D
