Good evening guys. Well the time to cough up a big amount has come. I hope you guys can help! The gearbox will not shift from first. My local indie said its the "gear selector modulator". I said no worries, I take a risk and shop around for it and he will charge me 180 for labour (I thought a bit excessive). Any suggestions were I can get a reconditioned unit?

I have sent Dronsfields an email and I am going to check Charlton Autoparts...thanks sj!

Dronfields and Charlton auto don't have it!!!

An A class gearbox is very different to a CLK55 gearbox.

Get it on a STAR , don't just change parts willy nilly unless you have deep pockets.

Are the modules not coded to the car ?

Yep - as above, the modules need to be coded to the car - I know this can be done using STAR for new units, probably also for secondhand ones but you would obviously need to check.

A friend of mine had to have a new selector just before Xmas - I think it was £300-400 for the part, plus fitting/coding IIRC. Another member on here also had one go with similar symptoms so the diagnosis sounds quite plausable to me :thumb:

If you can't find one secondhand, I'd bite the bullet for a new one - at least it comes with a warranty

Try and ask for some discount on the part? :)

Had to have mine replaced on the S320 CDI (2002)
Like yours, stuck in drive, tried all the other tricks to get it to release with no joy, ended up on a low loader and back to Merc dealer.
New selector box came from Germany and was coded, managed to get something off the final bill as a good will gesture, still had to spend £600.

It is very likely that you will have to buy a new one. It will need to be coded too.

Yes really ;)

I wasn't aware the OP had asked for a gearbox specialist , i was under the impression he was looking for a source of secondhand selector modules.

My apologies.

I think the original poster was wanting one for a W208 CLK55 but it is useful to know that there is a reconditioner out there :thumb:

oops, it didn't say.
anyway, whatever you need for your w168 you know where to look. just google forrera mercedes.

Stuck in first sounds like a electrics pack? Thought the only coded gear selector modules where w220 s class?
