Does anyone know if the sun sensor mentioned as part of the aircon upgrade is the same as the ambient light sensor that controls the instrumentation and COMAND illumination levels?

No it's not.
The ambient light sensor does what you say where as the sun sensor sits ontop of the dash and boosts the aircon when the sun is out.

Thanks Dieselman:)

Another question, whats the black dome shaped "button" in the centre of the air vents on the bonnet? (My car is a W203 2005)

The black dome thing is your sun sensor.
If you move from shade to direct sunlight this little devil will regulate the temperature & increase the blower speed accordingly.

Cool  Erm, so to speak :D

Me again, you know its that black round dome, one side of mine is a dummy

The amount of sensors is different from model to model, yours has 4 inside, under the one dome

Yep! I know that. This guy on another forum told me... very knowledegable, patient and helpful chap. I hope to meet him real soon?...

Looking at the Standard and Luxury climate control systems in the brochure, the only significant difference between the 2 systems is the Sun sensor on a C203. (If I'd have known that the difference wasn't just the digital display I might have specced it). I assumed that a sunlight sensor was an essential component in a climate control system. Having reread the brochure I understand why the climate seems ineffective in strong sunlight, requiring manual intervention.

Is the sensor present in cars with the standard climate control and can it be activated?

Just catching up with this and other forums after working away during the week. Malcolm I just like to let you know that your knowledge and assistance is greatly appreciated and it's other forums loss.

Well, my car has the standard (Thermatic) aircon and has the black dome fitted in the centre of the bonnet grill. Whether it contains a sensor I'm not sure, I haven't been able to see any wires going to it but it is very close to the wiring loom for the heated washer nozzles.

I am looking into upgrading to the luxury (Thermotronic) system so will have to investigate more. I haven't noticed any change in the current systems response to strong sunlight, one of the reasons I'mthinking of the upgrade, the other is the huge hysteresis the current system suffers from.

I would be intrested to hear from anyone with a Thermotronic system regarding the effectiveness on temperature control of this unit.
