have an ongoing "problem" due to this gr8 sunny weather - if i keep my dash nice and clean & shiny when the sun hits the top of the dash i get a reflection of it right across the windscreen - virtually blocks my vision - anyone found a solution to this - or no body else had this situation

The answer is, dont keep it shiny! You can get matt finish cockpit cleaner, looks better than the glossy type and wont reflect as badly. I just bought a tin made by Turtle Wax, works well, from Halfords. Theres probably better stuff out there though.

Allan

yes, armourall matt finish-or just use a damp sponge or do as I do and hoover the dust with the brush attachment from the dyson-the brush gets in all the nooks and crannies too:D

I have just started placing a black golfing flannel on mine for just this reason. The windscreen appears truly clear with it on.
I might get some stick on matt felt fablon as a permanent measure.

It's hard to understand why MB made the dash such a reflective shape.

thanks dieselman - unfortunately as i am just about to start chauffeuring with the car thtas not an option - will try this matt polish and hope it does the trick.

Did you buy some in the 70s and keep it stored somewhere or are you planning to travel back in time to get it? I didn't think fablon existed any more! ;)

if we travelled back in time - could also get some of that awfuk stick on fur you used to see on escorts etc. :D

It was only an Idea and I didn't know fablon no longer existed. Obviously you have tried to obtain the stuff much more recently than me Shude.;)

I always use a clean cloth soaked in a warm bucket of water on the dash and never apply any substance/polish due to the glare in sunlight etc.

Fablon might still exist, I was only joking :D . I only mention it because a colleague of mine claimed he had a fablon dash/interior on some 70s car he customised.

What would I know? I missed almost all of the 70s due to not being born yet!

Isn't Fablon sticky back plastic? In which case you can certainly still get it. But you wouldn't want to put it anywhere near your car - or anytihng else for that matter:D

I remember my Grandma had a beautiful old bedroom suite made from Walnut. In the 70s - she covered every scrap of it with a light wood effect Fablon. Must have cost her a fortune - and it looked bloody awful. I've now got that suite and getting the stuff off was a nightmare!

This thread set me searching and looky here:

Dashboard reflections in Windscreen

You have just highlighted a favourite complaint of mine. Time and time again the driving experience in bright sunshine of modern cars is marred by the "headup display" reflection of the dashboard in the windscreen in the drivers line of sight. Its always a bit annoying to have the ghostly apparition the demisting vents or radio speaker grills floating in your forward vision. Its mainly due to the much sharper rake of modern windscreens and hence greater depth of dashboard. Very few manufacturers have actively addressed this problem, large Volvos are particularly bad, surprising from a manufacturer which prides itself on driver ergonomics! Lighter colours or shiny trim are particular bad. Subaru seem to have partialy addressed this in their latest Legacy model but not many other manufacturers have at present. A truely matte non reflective dashboard top would seem to be an easy solution.

I've got some light and dark woodgrain effect Fablon somewhere, it's pretty useful if you're doing DIY on a caravan interior :o :)

But back on topic, car manufacturers normally do design to avoid reflection in the windscreen ... as Flash said, a cloth and warm water is all I ever use.

I put a compass on the dash of my Sharan - a nice Sherrill one, not a Halfords special :D

The reflection of that in the screen was a big irritation ... sprayed the domed top surface matt back - perfect :)
