While travelling on the motorway yesterday, the speed limits were set to 50 and the signage said, speeds limits in force for system test.

Can anyone explain what this may mean? Are they just testing the signs? In which case, just post up a lovely message so we can get on our way rather than reducing the speed and making us take more time to travel home.
 
On a serious note, if they are testing the 'system', then they are not testing just the signage. They will be collecting many points from sensors regarding how traffic slows down and speeds up. Traffic management these day relies heavily on computer modeling, and computers require raw data aka data points.

(In other words, we are training Highways England's AI systems... :D )
 
I'm guessing that the test is also to see how many drivers bother to look at, can see, and can read the overhead signs...
