Taxi nearly 1 million miles

I should have clarified. It would have to be a MB! :p

When I did customer collect of my first C-Class in 2008, at the Sindelfingen plant they had an exhibition of what they termed “the millionaire's club” - MB cars that had run for at least 1,000,000 miles. Amongst them was a Finnish W124 taxi that had covered (from memory) almost 1.2 million miles and still looked reasonable.

Germans used to clock their old vehicles before selling them making car look more fresh than they really are, wonder what is the correct mileage on this taxi after all trips around the globe?
According to link car is in Albania, I bet they have salt free roads in winter down there, the W124 was a ruster if not maintained properly.

My father worked "on the bench" in the motor trade for 40-odd years, having served his apprenticeship in the late 1940's.

In the early 1970's he was asked by a trade acquaintance if he could "correct" the mileage on a very tidy, but long-legged Mercedes W115. On opening the speedo - which had almost 100k miles on the odo - he found a bit of masking tape on which was written "Oh no, not again! I lost 70,000 miles already!".

My w201 190d 2.5 is pretty high mileage at 305,000miles. Still starts first flick of the key and shows just over 2 bar oil pressure at a hot idle. Funny thing is these old n/a OM diesel engines love to rev, and have to be to make 'good' progress, so their longevity cannot even be attributed to never being 'trashed'. I can only assume they are just a very strong engine design.

305,000:) I'm considering buying one. If you were to go out for a drive, and not thrashing it, not much traffic about, hardly any stop / starting. What mpg do you get?

My 190d 2.5 is manual which is a bit more economical than an auto. Expect 40 to 50 mpg. They are economical cars especially if you can find a cheap supplier of vegetable oil to run them on. The om602 diesel is a very refined engine, nickname the whispering diesel bitd. Here is a period test which may be of interest.

Thank you. :)

When I was young my dad had several Volvos. Initially a 144 then 164s.

IIRC they were the first cars to have capacity for a million miles on the odometer.

Highest I've done is 200,000 on a C220 CDI only issues I had were a problem with the water pump and a fuel line leak. Certainly nowhere near 1m.

Back then Volvo was built to last forever.

I just sold a 300TE with 250,000 miles , far from my highest

and not Diesel .

Genuine question. What is it with driving a car to such high miles. Frugality, the challenge of doing the distance or like old cars? I’m assuming you did not put all the miles on the cars.

I usually get bored with a car after a couple of years (also why I frequently change brands) but with my SLK (which was a daily driver) and now my SL, I just never get bored driving it.
