Hello

Third MOT we have had for our little A class that seems to be doing really welll, passed again...but

Advisory that slight rattle at tickover could be cat?

Now its my wifes car but I've noticed this and suspected poss Cat as I held the back box as it was on tickover to see if that stopped it.

Its hardly anything and is only at tickover.

My question is a Cat seriously exspensive? (last one I bought was £30 from the cats protections..ooops sorry wrong cat)

Will it get worse and worse?

The garage was a non mercedes local one that I get to do things such as MOT's and fit parts if needed. I had a discount cupon making the MOT only £29.95 which at least was good :)

Would this one on Ebay for £185 be any good?

When cats break up there's a risk that the fragments can get sucked back to the engine.

That said my mate had a well and truly fragmented cat on a Renaultsport 172 - which he drove hard - and he ran it for 2 years plus without problem other than a very intrusive noise!!

We had the cats replaced on the ML when the car was about a year old - under warranty but the dealer said the cats were £1k each IIRC.

I suspect an after market part would inevitabley be cheaper.

thanks...

I'm not sure if the exhaust on a A210 is actaully any different than any other model in the range other than the AMG back box? guess trip to Merc garage to see the pics on screen?

I guess by law a cat is needed and I cannot get a pipe welded between the parts :)

Pretty certain you can get universal cats now they just need your pipe size.

As for removing it, i decatted my last 3 discos with no probs at the mot, but newest one was a y plate 2001 and they were all diesels.

Plus lambda sensors would pick up the difference and prob put an engine light on.

Check the chrome tailpipe. Stones can get caught inside it.

The rattle can come from the bracket too. As yet I have not seen one broken up on a 168
