The thing I hate most about my car is....

Distronic Plus Proximity Warning Beeps!

Don't get me wrong, I love my S and I love it's gadgets. It's the best car I've had for commuting, but....

Merc designers what were you thinking making the 'beep' from the dash sound just like a fault warning and then make a warning triangle flash on the dash to complete the illusion! This has the effect on drivers that they instantly look down at the dash at the critical moment they should be looking at the road....madness! I can't seem to stop myself even now I know what it is after several false alerts.

I do wonder how many accidents this has caused....or are Mercedes just trying to show off their pre-safe brake & assist on a regular basis!

Depends how you're driving - if you're approaching a stationery object with no apparent attempt to steer around it (as early as the car likes) it will do that - but typically I get the triangle when "just over safe braking distance" to the car in front (normally in motorway traffic when they switch speeds and I've got Distronic off) - but it only beeps when they rapidly decelerate.

I think I've had a triangle/beep when going around a tight corner with a wall...

For me, one time that happened "properly" (guy in front did a hard stop due to a crash in front) and my Pre-safe BAS cut in and cut in fast.....

My pet hate? The stupid BlueEfficiency gearbox disconnect when at a standstill, so you get a horrible delay when trying to pull away....

One aspect of the stop/start I don't like is when i stop and switch off the engine whilst picking my grandchildren up from school. I'm usually there about 15-20 mins before they come out and have to open the drivers door to stop all the electrical systems and have to restart the engine to either open the windows or put the wipers back on. Also command only gives me 3 minutes before it switches itself off when You're stopped. The only way round this is to pull the stop/start button out and use the key. PITA.

I would check the battery.... COMAND should give you more than 3 minutes, my experience with both the W203 and the W204 is that it lasts around 15-20 minutes (depending on tne battery charge state) before shutting down.

I am kicking myself for not researching more thoroughly before buying the W204, it was made just 3 months before MB started fitting them with KOM modules, so I cant have TomTom Live Traffic, and without it the navigation is pretty usless in town.

Windscreen wiper that wobble and vibrate across the screen.

My wife who notices nothing with cars often remarks that they are awful and this is a basic operation that Mercedes should get right.

By the way my previous Mercedes did the same.

My wife’s Aygo on the other hand has wipers that glide effortlessly across the screen.

The stupid tailgate wipe on my S204 that only wipes about every 10 seconds. Means most of the time in wet conditions, especially on motorway/dual carriageway, you are totally reliant on the wing mirrors - the rear screen on an estate is a muck magnet so in seconds is opaque so the rear view mirror is useless. It should have delay variable from slow to continuous.

Tyre wear rate is my biggest pet hate, only followed by the cost of replacements...

Head in the shed today. Didn't mean the stop/start system, l meant the Keyless entry system.

I hate with a passion any unnecessary things they have been automated outside my control.

No 1 irritant is the stupid "courtesy see you to the door lights" that come on the second the ignition is turned off. Firstly I never need them and worse they come on in broad daylight when I park in my garage. They time out after a while but don't even begin to time out until the last door or boot is closed. And what if you just stopped and don't want to get out of the car - they still come on and run the battery down. Private investigator on surveillance operations need not apply. Now I can see they might be useful to some but why am I not permitted to disable them.

Their innate, unswerving ability to recognise that it's nearly (but not yet) pay day and that today is the day, more than any other day ever, that I really need the car to just start up and go.

I owned a beautiful Rosso Red Ferrari 340 TS. It had a light on the dashboard that told you (and I am not making this up) when it had broken down. Yes... Really... There you are at the busiest traffic junction in the history of busy traffic junctions (well the a34 Newbury in rush hour) the car stops in the middle of two lanes (as I was changing lanes) and refuses to go. But wait.... What is the heartening orange light I see before me, a beacon of hope, something that will stop the ground from opening up and swallowing us all. yes it's a light telling me the car has broken down.

Paying a premium price for a car I haven’t take too and wishing I could go back in time and spend the money on an E55 and having money in the bank at the same time

The sodding £535 quid a year tax bill.. for a car that does c.3000 miles a year.

At least the Ypsilon is free..

I'd agree with that but paid 3 times that last year for any cars taxed & most are sorn most of the time! Also they keep on taking too much DD tax after it has been sorn & I have to speak to DVLA to get them to refund the payments they took that they shouldn't have done.

Pain in the butt and a silly system for me. Why don't they do cars tax on the person not the cars? Or dump the tax on fuel. Costs me quite a bit of time every month just on car tax. I even have a separate dedicated bank account just for car tax!

Awwww - it took Mercedes engineers decades to design in the happy wiper shimmy - it shows you that your car is excited and healthy. Any old graduate engineer can make them glide as demonstrated by the Aygo.....
