i bought a thickness gauge today to set my spark plugs along with a haynes manual it sats to set the gap at 1.0mm how do i set it on the feeler gauge it doesnt have 1.0mm on it

Add the feelers together until they total 1mm

Eg. if you have a 0.2 , 0.3 and 0.5 , that totals 1mm , slide all three into the gap.

That's quite a common question with feeler gauges - even caught me out when I first used them! (gapping plugs for a motorbike at the time ;))

Perhaps it's because there's so many different thicknesses - you could be forgiven for thinking that they didn't have the size you needed etc.

If you buy new plugs from Merc they come already set to correct gap.

After 18000 miles (or whatever your timescale is) just throw them away and buy another set.

There should be no need to gap plugs anymore.

The plugs for mine are like 2 pounds each !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed on all points - but it doesn't hurt to check :)

Occasionally plugs are out of spec - rare I grant you.

No one use their fingernail anymore to gap plugs then? :o:D

Right!

And still do the timing by ear and twisting the dizzy, check engine condition with a stethoscope to the block.

Stethoscope...pah! :o

You mean an old, long-handled screwdriver or a broom handle ;)

Ah, the good old days!

one of my cars responds well to a bit of old fashioned tinkering. no prizes for guessing which one.
