The wing is in need of ripping off and scrapping .Every time i clean it, or go out to the car it hits me right away. This is just like a nail in my shoe ,it wont let me get the job done and finished with . Had a joke from the mot chap on Thursday . Thought he was giving me a MOT failure ..But he said- you will have to mind how you go . I said why , he then said, you will wear it out . I said why, he then said you have only done 104 miles from the last MOT. I said yes i know. Once for mot , and the other for you to fit the prop shaft coupling . So another year to get it right body wise .I said that last year .And the year before that .. Hear we go again ..DSC04241.JPG

Peter then it would be defeating my object .You see in all i have had 3 aftermarket wings in the past year .Worked on them ,and i did not fit them on to the car .Fred Flintstone could make one better with a stone hammer . All the parts that wanted replacing have been replaced with nothing but Mercedes .Now your asking me to fit a part that is not original . Thats not on .

Is it not possible to take it off and have a body shop cut out the rusted area and let in a fabricated patch or is it too complex? This would at least keep it original.

If that’s the only area of rust it doesn’t look too bad. The rust could be buffed off then treated with anti rust and filler then top coated, you would hardly notice it.

I did several areas on my sons CLK last summer and it still looks good. I spent three days between getting all the muck off it and giving a right good valet. I even removed the drivers side carpet which surprisingly is an individual part then gave it a power wash.

He still owes me

Fly and merc That's the plan C . B plan was to replace it with used one , none about any good that is . A was to replace it with as new one those are nothing like the old one I have on the car .Done this and it was sent back .Nothing but rubbish right now from mb most the parts are made in China .

A decent bodywork guy would have that repaired in a couple of hours.

I'd be asking round for recommendations in your area and letting a good one have a go with it.

daveenty ,, that is the idea, as soon as this rain stops . We do have a selection in the area of body shops . But i do need a good job .And most just like to use bondo filler for the repairs . And i need new metal letting in ...I will remove the wing from the car .This will make it better in one way ,the car wont be in his way ,only a wing .. And i will tell the body shop that i want it sprayed at the same time . Again most of them say we need the car to blend it in ,why with our day and age paint can be mixed up to match the rest of the bodywork .And i can take the other passengers wing for him to use as a sample, and for patches .. I will let everyone know how i get on later ,well ASAP ..

Wanting the car to ensure a good match is normal. Computer matching still requires a good sampling of paint from across the spectrum of your car. My paint guy is one of the best and uses all manner of kit including his vast experience, knowledge and skill and a battery of computerised tools to get a "perfect match". If you are looking for it to be wrong? It will be wrong. If you have not met their wishes in giving them everything that they ask to get to the best finish? They will will always have that 'get out'.

On my 124 Estate. My paint guy said he could not match it:

  • 30 year old paint and lacquer.
  • Too many repairs required.
  • One new bonnet.
  • Slab sides and metallic paint on a huge wagon.

I gave in, and we had her repainted. I have never once regretted that advice or decision. I know, without any fear of contradiction that the paint is perfectly matched on every panel. Expensive yes. Way more than I could afford. But it was that or, have a patchwork quilt.

The biggest problem with paint matching is Metamerism or Metamers. Put quite simply, it is all about the way the eye sees reflected light. Certain colours will appear to be the same under some lights, but slightly different under others. With metallic paints the thickness of the paint and the off the gun pressure can also influence the degree of metamerism. Some of my 30 years in the motor trade were spent running a classic sports car operation.

Dealing with paint issues back in the late seventies/early eighties got easier when paint mixing systems came along, tinting and shading was quite an art form. The breakdown of colours used to mix a some paints are pretty amazing when you look at them on a spec sheet. Blacks and reds to make silver sounds potty to the layman, but there are all manner of odd sounding combinations used to get the colours we often see as simple ones.

I've used a lot of Dinitrol product - my van was Dinitroled when I got it and I've never looked back. Their Rust converter is an amazing piece of kit.. kills rust dead and seals it to stop oxygen getting back in.. only downside is its expensive, but it does what it says on the tin.. really good, so I'd go for it without hesitation..

Metalic paints are good , thats only till you need to do work on the body .But they do stand up to bad weather conditions, and hard use much better than cellular paints do . I did three cars in the past .All with cellular paints ..But the after work to get it looking good was time consuming . Like wet and dry it down and a finish off with T Cut .And then a final polish with a good wax . Cellular paint is much better to match up. My Rover V8 wing was done in the spare room I had a blue beard and a tash, and eyelashes after i had finished .I took the wing in to my spare room to spray it .Put it on the [war depots ] ironing board with news paper to cover it over .Did the job ,like two coats and the last one a clear cellulose thinners . But then it was decorating time as the walls were the same colour as the wing i had painted ,, blue..Never saw this till i had finished .. This was in a new house,, while she was out . That cost me more than if i had sent it in to the paint shop after she got home ..
