Thoughts on the E320 CDI?

It's pretty expensive for a saloon with missing sh. I would question why it's "missing" with only two owners. Most likely explanation imho is that it didn't get serviced. These pre euro 6 cars are getting cheaper and harder to sell as low emissions zones start to creep ever wider. Bristol bath Birmingham to name three off the top of my head. I'd buy a cheaper older euro 4 with a full (proper) sh if it were me.

Check out the e320 estate in the for sale section here....an honest description sounds perfect as a work horse and at £2k it looks like a much better deal.

Well iv paid a deposit now so the car is technically mine. Ill give it a good look over on Monday and test drive it. If it doesnt feel right then obviously i wont bother with it. The garage are servicing the car for me as well so I cant ask for anymore. Price wise, I think its pretty good. Higher mileage examples owners are asking for less and lower mileage examples owners asking for more so i think the price at £5250 is realistic.

As people stated, why pay thousands more for technically the same car if its purely only used as a mile muncher. If all is well with this, it will be a keeper for years to come and next summer I can look to get a C63/M3 as a weekend toy

In June I finally manned up and tackled the turbo flutter on wider throttle openings on my 2007 E320cdi. MB Stockton wanted £2800 inc vat to supply a turbo, as previously said they don't supply actuators. The best Garrett turbo price I saw was £690, I eventually paid £144 for a Hella actuator from Turbo Vanes on line, an easy fit and problem solved.

Fair enough. Do check for signs of oil leak at the rear of the engine undertray, these engines are oil tight except for the oil cooler seals. There's a whole bunch of dismantling to get to the cooler which makes it a £1000 repair. Try to look at the rear brake pipes as they all rust and it can turn into hundreds of £ repair. Other than that it's the usual stuff. Have a really good look and get written agreement to anything that needs to be fixed, I can pretty much guarantee that a 3 month AA warranty will have more holes than a Swiss cheese. Good luck.

Totally agree on the AA warranty. For the age and mileage of the car, anything that does need sorting I’m presuming they won’t pay out as it will come under ‘wear and tear’

Have a good look at the rear brake pipes where they join the caliper , usually hiding behind a small rubber flap . Common issue for rot on that bend , also the brake pipes have been covered in grease or similar for a number of years on each mot . Other issues are front end knocks over small repetitive bumps / uneven road. I sold an 04 for £3200 many many years ago so the price isn't far off tbh.Screenshot_20220814-125428.png

Is the front knock due to the drop-links?

One of many items tbh.

Link arms , hub ball joints , suspension arm ball joints and bushes, upper suspension strut control arm bushes and ball joints , shock absorbers top mounts ,and finally the shock absorbers can also knock.

Yeah i noticed that on the MOT's, brake pipes corroded. I think pretty much each W211 I looked at, this was common on MOT's. Is it an expensive job to put right?

It is if you replace the 2 rears completely. The back subframe has to be dropped. A car that age and mileage ,I'd opt for a cut back to good pipe and join the rest . The fronts are not too bad. Whip the covers off underneath at the rear, when you get it because most of the rot will be hiding under them as they don't come off at MOT's . So the pipes infact go years unchecked, only the visible pipe is checked.

If it is the rear pipes that need replacing then the fuel tank will probably need to be dropped and possibly the subframe.

7 years ago I had the rear pipes replaced on my C320 by an independent. That came to £599.99 including VAT.

The parts came to £35!

Will they eventually need replacing or is it a component that won’t fail totally?

They will need replacing at some point. If left then they can begin to leak brake fluid or burst under pressure..

Left too long and you will have an MOT fail at the very least.

I’ll budget to get it done at some point then as it sound like they all need replacing as mileage increases

More age than milage.

MB, for some reason, used coated mild steel lines, virtually every one else uses Cunifer, a Copper /Nickel (and other metals) alloy which has superior corrosion resistance.

Update: didn’t end up buying the car. Drove ok but wow under normal braking the brake pedal went almost to the floor before it had any impact. Also brakes were making a scraping noise. I was told this was because it had had new rear brake pads but I could just sense a red flag so walked away….gutted as it looked a nice motor but wasn’t really wanting a big bill immediately
After buying. On top of that the car came from
British Car Auctions and that was the end of it for
Me.

Why would new rear pads give excessive pedal travel and scraping sounds?

Either dealers have little to no knowledge of cars or they assume buyers are all mechanically inept and can be fooled with such pathetic BS.

Yep. Don’t get me wrong im no mechanic but even the mechanic came to see me and was telling me it was down to new brake pads against old discs….no thank you I’ll have my £250 deposit back cheers….which I’m still waiting for 😬
