Tinted windows?

Doc matt, they're definitely tinted :thumb:

I love tinted windows as I think they make cars look much nicer. I have the factory privacy glass on my car and I wouldn't get the fronts done like I used to when I was younger. Would be too embarrassing getting pulled over!

I had my W204 done at Tintshield in SE19. Best job I've seen, and I've had a few done over the years. Can hardly see the dot matrix round the screen at all.

Love the tints. Tastefully done they look great. Look cheap when overdone (too dark, etc)

My QP has factory tints & they are slightly short of the edges of the glass at the tops only it seems. Seen other QP's the same with factory tints. They look good and the quality looks good. Maybe something about the QP's needing them to be a bit short of the top.

The XJ I had with factory tints though went fully to the edges. Looked great but it was chuffing dark. The XJ rear screen was like a letterbox to look out of & with the very dark tint it was almost impossible to see out of. I think a tint looks good on most decent cars now. Certainly better with than without IMHO.

Most factory tints would be dark glass not film applied over the glass. Film usually stops just short of the top edge of opening windows to help prevent peeling do to friction with the top seal.

Managed to take some pics this morning. I think a good job will make it look like the tint is factory fitted. But as mentioned above not all do, and some have a gap especially if the film is pre-cut. Mine was not.

Anyone had trouble with front doors and police? The C63 above looks fantastic, but I would imagine might be an issue with being too dark.

Though I'm finding little things like that seem to not be an issue on more expensive cars. Try it on an old Fiesta/Saxo and probably more of a problem.
No sure plod are too fussed about it, insurance company might have something to say about any incident on a dull day or at nigh time though.

Just read the bit about no front number plate...are you serious ? All I can say is that car must not go out much, wouldn't last 5 minutes round where I live before getting a pull.

Interestingly the law goes easier on you if you have no number plates than it does if you have 'messed' with them. But to get away with no number plates you must at least have holes and maybe a few broken screws hanging out of your bodywork to 'prove' they were there 'when I left home officer..'

I think it depends on what type of police you speak to.

In the Met, regular response officers wouldn't care about your tints, but drive past a traffic car and they'll have you pulled over with their tint man out in no time at all lol

I've put 11,000 miles in 6-7 months, no issue so far.

I have an old plate in the windscreen on the dash, and the bracket is in the back with old double sided tape that's worn out. So if I do get stopped, it's not too unreasonable to explain what happened. I bought the car like this tbh, and previous owner never had a problem. It could actually become a problem if an officer stops me and has seen the car several times previously but was not in a position to chase after me. :D

OK, that makes more sense.

Personally, I think that having the number plate in the dash/front windscreen looks totally naff and would rather just have a plate fixed to the front of the car. But that's just me. Each to their own, variety is the spice of life, etc.

Yeah, the guy that does mine in Manchester , tints all the way to the top, then gently files the inside top edge of the glass into the film , so it is seamless. Looks factory.
My fronts are technically illegal too, that's why I still keep my reg plates on...don`t want to attract attention !

Thread resurrection

I had the painful experience of being pulled over by the Police to be told my front window tints are too dark. They checked with their tint meter and were correct.

I explained that I was driving to a wedding with my two young sons and nephew in the car and that my car was being used as a wedding car, hence the white ribbon. They asked me to leave my car and get in the back of theirs. I refused as my sons are 6&9 years old and my nephew 13, so they agreed one of them (police officer) would stay with them! I obviously checked out ok and then received a run down on the implications of tinted front windows. I was asked if I'd purchased the car from new (I guess this would prove I tinted the windows), but said no, it was bought used. I was then told that they were going to remove the tints! I explained again that I was on my way to a wedding and in less than an hour would be taking the groom and his 9 year old son to the church.

He gave the instruction for the other officer to remove the tint film. I explained again that I was on my way to a wedding and did not want them making a mess and the car looking rough! He ignored me and the Officer proceeded to try and remove the film. After a minute or so of struggling to catch an edge, I asked again if he could stop and give me the opportunity to remove them properly after the weekend. At this point the Officer came back over to us and said he couldn't remove the film as it's a very well done tint and he didn't want to make a mess if it didn't come off properly!

They wrote me a ticket and £50 fine and told me they were trusting me to remove them myself. They wished me well at the wedding and joked about dropping into the party later to join the fun!!!! You've got to be kidding.....I kept a straight face and mouth shut.

So after 25 minutes I was back in my car, late for the wedding and with my sons worried about why the police pulled me over and kept me in the car! On the other side of town there were probably half a dozen robberys, several GBH's, thousands of cars driving around with no Tax, MOT or insurance, multiple drug deals going down and the odd attempted murder. But they got my £50 and rightly so, so all is good.

I decided to remove the tints today and it's a bloody nightmare of a job! I am so glad the Police Officer was unable to remove it as the car would have looked a mess for the wedding.

Rant Over

Jules

Sorry to hear you got stopped and at least you made the wedding without the car being messy. Not sticking up for the police but you'll find you were probably stopped by traffic officers (ana l about tints, number plates and doing 41 in a 40) and not real decent bobbies (who do all the hard stuff like the things you mentioned)

I have similar tints on my white CLS but luckily I haven't been stopped yet. If I do see that I'm going to pass a police car I try to put my window down to show my white face.

Yes, unfortunately in Birmingham we have a lot of police officers who tend to stop brown people more than white people. My best mates a bobby (he's brown too) and he tells me what goes on. :(

I can imagine.

I was pulled about 2 miles from Kidderminster, so not far from Birmingham. They were in an unmarked dark blue BMW 3 series, absolutely filthy inside.
