Top Up Gearbox ATF level

I have noticed a bit of an oile leak from the Gearbox, and am getting occasional clunky gear changes.

The car is a 2002 w220 S280.

I don't really have facilities to sort properly, so a phone call to book in to a good indie Merc specialist is imminent.

However, the car is used daily for a 3-4 hour commute, so I would like to top the level up slightly to before something major goes wrong.

I can see where to get dipsticks and anc check level, but am unsure where to add ATF to top up. Do I add it through the same place the dipstick goes? Also, as the cap is "tamper proof" can it be reused and does it stay in place?

Thanks.

yes down that dipstick tube, use a funnel and then you can reuse the cap, it has an O ring which helps it stay in place until you get a new lock.
Make sure you use the correct ATF and the level check procedure.

Thanks Joe. I think a phone call to an idie specialist I know at least used to be good first thing in the am, and trying to get a dipstick asap is in order. And trying to get the dipstick and oil asap as a fall back in the meantime.

Good luck with the dipstick it can be notoriously confusing to get a correct reading. Make sure the gearbox is good and hot 80'C is the MB recommended temp and replacement oil fill/dipstick cap locks are available on ebay. Good luck :thumb:

No worries Richard, I know it shows me as a new member but I was on the site for fair few years and then forgot my log in details so found it easiest to re register, I couldn't even remember my user name a sure sign of early onset Alzheimer's I think.
Don't be afraid to come back with any other questions or problems in future this is a great site with many knowledgeable people on it.
