Towbar electrics

I've a 97 c class estate with an oem detachable towbar fitted.My problem is that the lighting board plug dont fit the socket on the car, its got 13 pins.Is it wired to german spec or is there an adapter plug? or do i need to get the socket rewired?

You can get an adapter to split the 13 pin out into the two normal 7 pin sockets, it's a fairly common accessory e.g.
