Towing a caravan

You're right about the kerb weight.
I am running the maximum tyre pressures as spec'd for full load.
The van previously towed immaculately behind an Audi A4 3.0 tdi, similar weight distribution , 85 kgs nose weight, against 75 on the Merc. I expected differences, but not to the extent I am getting. The Audi did have an RS4 rear anti roll bar though....

The C350cdi estate is 1760kg.

OK sounds like you've covered most of the bases. Apart from suspension and tyre profiles the difference might be down to rear overhang - distance from back axle to towball. If that's bigger on the Merc it wouldn't be as stable. Maybe the Audi was a bit heavier too.

So it sounds like you're back to your original question ... doubt you'll find anyone who has tried it though, so you might just have to give it a go!

I believe the Audi was actually a bit lighter!
The problem only occurs when passing/being passed by people carriere sized up vehicles.
The combo is rock steady on twisty B roads, and on single carriageway A roads. Even through roundabouts at 40 - 50, still no problem, no sign of the van trying to take control, no pendulum effect at all.
I'll investigate a stiffer ARB, but worry about it invalidating the MB warranty, which still has 12 months to go ...

Well I hope you get it sorted ... nice to be able to relax on the motorway.

I guess you'd technically have to declare a different ARB as an insurance mod. too, although I suspect it's unlikely anyone would spot it (or care) if the car ever got inspected.
