Toyota Prius

Prius is to much of a mini-cab for me. So given the choice it would be the auris.

I'm not sure you've mentioned this, but what is the realistic fuel economy you achieve from the Auris?

I did nearly 5k in a prius mk3 and avg 68mpg.. with as high as 82mpg from Preston to Newbury on a quiet evening.

A work colleague had one and was achieving about 57mpg iirc.

He loved the instant acceleration from rest and whenever I saw him he was doing 75+ on the motorway.

I would definitely consider a hybrid as my next car and intend to try the E300 Hybrid.

Good question! As mine has the larger wheels and tyres (it's the T-Spirit) I can't achieve the claimed 73mpg (!) but on a run at steady 70(ish) I've seen a recorded 69. Average at the moment is 59. Not bad I guess.

Actually, it loves traffic as for a mile or so it drives on EV mode (battery) only. :)

Try the Lexus CT as well. It's the same hybrid drive as the Prius/Auris but is very mice inside and does have a more up market feel. Only a grand or two more as well.

If only it was a diesel.

I think a diesel hybrid makes a very compelling case for itself. Electric round town and for light duty work, diesel for heavier duty work.

Numerous reports slate those for their firm ride yet poor handling.

Nice looking car inside and out but I'd just take a normal prius and spend the two grand on err, petrol.

True. A B Class hybrid/diesel would be compelling I reckon as an everyday runaround... :)

But, I have to add, one thing that's very nice about the Toyota HSD is the very, very quiet petrol engine. In most driving situtations you can't tell when motor changes to engine - only on hard acceleration when the engine does scream a bit, but no where near as noisy as conventional (not atkinson cycle) engines. Can be quite uncanny sometimes!

Smells of cheese, though, and the holes in the skirting?

Didn't read the full thread, just saw this insightful contribution and spat Soave all over my front laughing. Must say certain cars do inspire that reaction in me too - there is a hot pink Suzuki Vitara that is always where I park to go to the gym

But don't you think it's a bit of a blinkered view.

Unfortunately it appears to be pretty normal among newer forum members.

It would be nice to see some greater interest in the technology and available options from other manufacturers.

DM I apologise for being a lightweight - it was a pretty funny Saturday night post and it made me laugh is all.

I have no issue at all with hybrid cars and I am sure it will be a big part of our lives in the future. The consensus among those who have driven them seems to be along the lines of 'not half as awful as you would have expected' so I might wait a little while before I invest myself. E300 looks cool though.

That hot pink Vitara though is definitely part of the past, it looks stupid and a death trap...

Yes, it's true - a cab firm 'round the corner from me has painted 5 or 6 of them banana yellow and it's put me off them for life (bit like the way Foxtons killed the Mini).

But - I'd rather have a yellow Prius pull up silently outside at 3am than a black cab...

I have a secret eco-car crush to admit to... I've always fancied the original Honda Insight. A weird aluminium-bodied stream-liner coupe with a tiny engine and no space, but someone managed over 2000 miles on a tank in one once! It reminds me of a Citroen SM that shrunk in the wash, surely not a bad thing.

No need to apologise, it wasn't really your post I was referencing. :)

I genuinely think it would be good if people had a bit more interest in car technology outside their own limited sphere.

It's a big world out there.

Hard ride and relatively poor boot space would put me off, but as a day to day motoring proposition the Prius is pretty compelling.

A taxi company I was using had them, indeed quite harsh ride and not very comfi in the back.

I came across this one one day when cycling a few years ago and some while later got to meet the owner.

He really loves it.
