Tracker aren't standard are they ?

That's the thing isn't it. I mean how often does a car get stolen without being trashed. I don't know. Bit weird. I mean I only went through the online change of my policy and it made 0 difference. Using comparison websites I found it made no difference either. Maybe 10 quid in places, maybe 20. Would be interesting to know how much the cost was per year.

I would be annoyed that a tracker (or any aftermarket kit) was installed.

They would have had to remove interior parts/trim to install it. It would bug the heck out of me, you should have been told or given the option (to install) before handing your money over.

Now I wonder if they do have to though. I noticed some come with tracker prep.

Ah I don't know. Trying not to make a big deal out of it but I do want more info from the dealer about.

.. the T&C say it has to stay in even if sold or SORN...

Surely these T&C don't apply to you? The tracking provider might refuse to give you any information, and that's fair enough, but I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to remove it (if you can locate it), or take it to a specialist, who will.

Interesting, My GT63 was a directors car at Marshall Motors, it didn’t have a tracker on it.

How can you be sure....................?

I don't care about removing it. But I want to know how the damn thing works and what the subscription actually includes. I don't want any surprises like cops showing up because I knowingly have it moved etc.

As an aside, a Tracker presumably has some parasitic drain on the battery?

Tracker or no tracker, going by what has been posted regarding modern Mercedes Benz cars on this forum recently your battery will go flat anyway. It could happen after 7 or 8 days on 'non use' or possibly while you are out shopping and leave your car standing for an hour or so. :p :p

Well he sort of sort it - I got a letter saying I have the 'first year subscription' free for a year from today. I rang them up and of course they didn't give me much in terms of what it is .. It only says company is Tracker and tracker itself is S7 Assest Location Systems. But on their website none of the product fit the description ... so random ..

What seems disappointing is that the insurance doesn't look to be cheaper with tracker.
When I picked up my car, the sales guy produced some paperwork with regards to a tracker from the same company, he said all their high value management cars had to have trackers fitted.
Brilliant I though, saves me getting on fitted, as my insurance company said they wanted one fitted, and if the car was stolen without a tracker I would not be covered.

Anyway, I was put in touch with Tracker via Mercedes as they setup the years subscription.
Tracker then tell me that "something's not right" with the tracker and it needed investigated, they had movement alerts (probably because the car was on a ferry with me coming back to Northern Ireland.
This was on 01/05/19

I contacted them several more times within 7 - 10 days, even Mercedes tried to contact them.
Eventually they said they would organise for an engineer to visit to fix whatever was wrong.
I'm was still waiting for that engineer on 1/5/20 when they contacted me multiple times about renewal.
I got several letters, emails and two phone calls.
I explained to the first caller the problems, he looked at the notes and said it was all very strange that no one had been in contact.
I got another call after that asking would I be willing to allow the car to be inspected, which I declined.

They are up there with the customer service I've seen, absolutely woeful.

I had a tracker fitted from another company, a local chap came and fitted it.
Really nice fella, I explained about the Tracker network problem.
He said he used to deal with them, and stopped as they were nothing but hassle, he also advised not letting them anywhere near the car.

The tracker I have now seems pretty good, I can look where the car was at any point in time it would seem, and what speed it was travelling at.
For example, I was able to see that Mercedes took it for a 2.1 mile drive before its last service was performed - speed limits were not exceeded either.

So I now have two trackers, one which is good, and one which doesn't something, but doesn't work properly, nor is it actively monitored.

The fella that fitted the new one said to jsut leave the other one alone, as the battery drain would be minimal

Thats because they can be disabled in 2 minutes flat, wast of money bin after the first year free.

Probably because the director didn't want to be tracked ;)

I actually emailed Marshall Bolton/Preston for clarification yesterday. My car was bought on allocation, for use by the Director as part of BIK package and not a demonstrator. But that's not to say it wasn't demonstrated. They do have an asset management company that looks after demonstrators and loan cars.

I think possibly there is some conflation between 'asset management tracking devices', like the ones that report people using company vehicles outside of work hours, and monitored theft protection trackers. I would guess dealer demonstrators and the like will probably have the former installed and enabled so the owner of the vehicle knows where it is, and for example is not being used on a track or as a taxi. Most rental cars have these installed these days, as a stipulation of the finance provider.

I told my insurance the only tracker I have is the Mercedes Me one, Admiral said it didn't make a difference to the premium regardless.

It would appear the insurance company agrees with you , they do not give a discount for a tracker. They must think it has no use.
In my experience there's a huge inconsistency between insurers when it comes to trackers on high value / high performance cars like AMG's. Some simply refuse to cover unless a tracker is fitted, while others are relaxed about it and offer no discount for doing so. They can't all be right...

Mine is the latter. I got mine with Sainsbury's that is underwritten with AXA. They don't seem to care either way and no discounts to be had. Still no response from my dealer about the tracker. Will chase I guess.

Not to detract from the OP's thread, but the subject has me wondering about my 64plate E63.
It had two previous owners before I bought it last year, the first being the dealer principle of MB-Newbury as his company car.
How could I check whether a tracker was fitted in my car?
Would a call to Tracker HQ reveal anything with just the Reg# or Vin# or would they even give out that info?

Problem is there are more than one tracker company.

If they've done it properly, wouldn't there be an additional cable to the fuse box ?

^ No idea. Last Tracker I had fitted on a Sierra Cosworth had its own back up battery and no obvious connection to the car wiring loom.
I must take a look in the boot area, but it's probably well concealed anyway.

'funny' how the dealers respond in hours and when you ask a question post sale - silence ...

To be fair, with some dealers (or any brand) you’re lucky to get a response pre-sale.

It appears it is a Mercedes fitted tracker - the dealer sent me the official Mercedes blurb about the cost etc. - apparently I have access to the tracker website to check live tracking but of course they haven't provided me with the serial number and don't know anything about it.
