I'm going to book in the SL to a new Merc Indy to get various niggles ironed out (also to finally kick the cat!). I also want the fluids changed. My question is this, I want the gearbox, torque convertor, and gearbox fluids changed. Are they all covered by asking for the ATF to be changed, are do they have to be specified individually. Apologies for Numptie type question but my technical knowlege ended with the Bonneville!!

Thanks

Is my question too banal for a response or is it not quite as numptie as I thought?

You might try posting in the technical section that covers gearboxes.

An ATF change will cover them all provided it is flushed through as I don't think you can drain the torque converter seperately (not sure what year they removed the drain plug).

If you ask them to completely swap the old ATF for new ATF, they're obliged to do so. If yours is an auto, then 'change all the ATF' will cover the lot.

If they're a sound outfit they'll also change any gaskets/filters. Might also be worth asking them to put a new sump plug and washer in.

When you take it just tell them what you want. Say you want the ATF changing and the torque converter draining. I personally buy the filter and gasket from main dealer and just ask the gararge to fit and supply ATF. You may also want to consider buying your own ATF and asking the to use that. Some gear boxes need the proper MB ATF. Do a search elsewhere on forum for advice on this.
If in doubt, tell them what you want - it is your car and your money afterall.

Just had the ATF changed.

Cost:
Fluid 20.94
Gasket 10.40
Gearbox Oil Filter 51.32
Fluid 20.94

That's about £100 + VAT

Also finally kicked the Cat, they did a nice job, £170.00 +VAT. Nice growl now and def more responsive !!
