took my immaculate 05 ML 270 CDI Lux ( admittedly with 50K on the clock) in to John Weir Inverness today - looking to buy an 06 ML 320 CDi with great spec and low miles at 22 k.

Guess the trade-in allowance I was given ??

I wont hold you in suspense - 7K !! is this reality striking back, I paid 15K for this car 10 months ago..

but how much are they on his forecourt and also on fleabay & autotrader

you know as soon as you goto a dealer for a trad ein they will first ask you to remove your pants then bend over

Not really, if it's a desirable car that will sell easily on the forecourt I'd pay more than I should do for it.

We can only allow for cars what they are actually worth. It's not like your car is worth £8k but we'll offer £5k, it's worth whatever it's worth.

John R Weir !!!!!!!!!!! dear, oh dear, oh dear

I've two Mercs, both with full dealer history's until I bought them. Both went into JRW for servicing/repair when I first obtained them............ never again.

Bigger bunch of halfwit cowboys you will not find.

SL.. they had it for 3 weeks (having estimated 5 days), eventually got it back. was driving home (thankfully after the rush hour) all electrics failed at once and I only just managed to cruise into a layby (didn't know the wheel was so hard to turn without the power steering), called the RAC out and......... they'd forgotten to reconnect the alternator!!! and........ having had an initial safety check done and had all the work they roecommended carried out, had a wishbone collapse at 70mph (my guardian angel must have been in the passenger seat that day)

E200... again they had it almost twice the estimated time, went to collect it, they hadn't fitted the passenger airbag sensor I sent it in for, but they had fitted new rear springs, although I'd told them not to

Bunch of nincompoops

He is unlikely to want to retail it himself so will offer you what he can get in the trade for it, and they will be offering bottom book at best. Reality is that you have an old shape, four year old 4x4 with slightly above average mileage in a market where 4x4's virtually confer pariah status on the driver. That is before we even touch on the tax changes (both coming and threatened).

Tough one, but even if you do the deal, when the time comes to trade in the new ML it is likely you'll get the same treatment again.

Oh and it won't make you feel any better, but I paid £32.5k for my CLS320 in May 08 and got a top bid of £20k for it in December 08. Most bids were between £16k and £18k! Funnily enough I kept it.

Yikes

Even at £9k it is going to cost you £13k to get a one yr newer ML - albeit with a better spec - cant see how that is a good deal at all. Looks like you had a lucky escape; keep the 05 one for another 5 yrs - will hardly cost you a bean.

ytade in

Three points: -
1. You bought the car before the world fell apart. Almost all part ex prices have fallen especially on big expensive high VED low economy vehicles.
2. You can almost never buy a car from a dealer and sell 10 months later without losing both the dealer's margin (couple of grand) and a year's depreciation.
3. Always worth going to the Glass's Guide website and for £3 you get a full valuation of your car -trade price, part ex price, private sale, and dealer's price. Then you don't get done and don't get any nasty surprises.

Just to further illustrate the first point that hawk20 has made, I have a friend that works for Lexus. Yesterday he offered me a brand new RX350 with a list price of £40k for...wait for it....£28k! Whilst it is not for me, I am happy to put anyone in touch that may be interested in it.

I've heard the Aberdeen branch is poor, certainly far worst than other John R Weir branches. Don't know why though.

What I really dont understand is why people are shocked by these figures. We all know the world (specially it seems the UK) is going into deep reccession and yet we still expect to BUY our cars for peanuts but then strangly expect to get top dollar when selling.
This isnt a personal swipe at the OP, I am simply making an observation because there have been several similar posts, on this and other forums.
We seem to expect a double bite of the cherry, but reality is, you cant have it both ways. If you want cheap forecourt prices, then you have to accept that your present car is going to be worth less than you would prefer.
I dont mind saying that I paid nearly £17K for my 2004/5 W203 about 20 months ago. Its got a very good spec and I really wanted one with a sunroof, so my choice was limited. I doubt whether I could now get half that back on sale or trade-in. Probably alot less in reality.
We have to face facts. Our cars, for the most part are undesirable to many - even though we may love them.
The stark truth is, if you want good residuals, buy a Mini, because you wont with a Mercedes.
As I said, this is not a personal dig at the OP, just general comment.
