Tried to trade-in today

Surely its the price to change also?

If the new shape ML is £22K then that was probably £40K new so think of the person thats bought that....

Your worried on your price... Mines a 3.7 Petrol !!! hehehehe

I'm just keeping it as the longer I keep it the loss is better :) and anyway I love driving it.

Fact is look at the real prices in the Autotrader and Piston heads, for an 05 270cdi (I assume auto, leather etc?) then your probably looking more like 9K private??

What colour is it? it looks nice in the pic

Surely its the price to change also?

Exactly.

But how "fully priced" was the 06 ML at £22K - is that a bargain?

I've heard this so many times with dealers - they tell you options aren't worth anything on your p/x, then try to big up the car you're looking at because it's got some options.

When I bought mine I was told to go for a seven seater as they add quite a bit?

If I got a P/X no doubt the dealer would say ' ooh if it didn't have the extra seats I've got 3 people after one...blah blah..blah..'

They all talk smiddle when trying to get your custom.

took my immaculate 05 ML 270 CDI Lux ( admittedly with 50K on the clock) in to John Weir Inverness today - looking to buy an 06 ML 320 CDi with great spec and low miles at 22 k.

Guess the trade-in allowance I was given ??

I wont hold you in suspense - 7K !! is this reality striking back, I paid 15K for this car 10 months ago..
Couldn't help noticing your guilty admittance to having (50,000 miles) on your 270 cdi.I know of cars with this engine in with over 500,000 miles on,and still drive well and smooth.Car owners need to change their whole attitude towards mileage of such great cars and stop being ripped off or told otherwise

I paid £500 for my 190E 2.6 a year or so past .

I'll be selling it on for the same price , or might make a profit .

Haven't lost money yet on any of my cars .

Hi

Its a case of when your buying it that it's the best car on the forecourt but when your selling it that it's the worst car on the forecourt. According to the dealer.

Price to change is the thing, and it is ALWAYS more than you thought.

Here i am the expert and i have just realised i have never traded a car in and have only once bought off a dealer.

230K

..........keep the 05 one for another 5 yrs............

Why swap a 4 year old car that you know for a 3 year old one that you don't know? I prefer the older shape anyway. Keep it till it drops to bits.

(and going by my previous Y reg one - it won't be long):bannana:

Hi,

Took my 06 (55-plate) black ML320 CDi Sport (with airmatic @ 30K miles) and was offered (against new E-class estate)...£16,000  ....so, guess what?...It's worth more to me than that as I can use 'price to change' money (to new E-class) to maintain and run it for next 10 years so I'm also keeping it (anyway E-class doesn't have anything that the ML doesn't already have :bannana: :bannana: )

This represents a depreciation of > 60% over 3 years. When I sold previous ML (270 CDi@ 45K miles) 3 years ago p/ex value was 50% of initial purchase cost (over (almost) 4 years).

MB's certainly don't seem to hold their value any more

Cheers,

It's not just MB. Cars are all dropping in value just as fast as your house is.

It's more apparent with expensive cars and it's not difficult to find better ways of spending the cash you've 'saved' by not trading up.

How much difference does the colour make?

massive... red or green ml's can have 1.5k knocked off book value... white is just a no no... Black and silver are the only colours that dealers will pay book value.

Its just about reaching as many potential buyers as possible.

I'm looking for either a C class estate or ML around 10k. You really wouldn't believe how much in demand these cars are, if you are trying to buy one:)

Line the OP I'll just keep driving my old car till it falls apart.

Depreciation has certainly steepened. I paid £23k for my 55 E280CDi in September 07 with 32k showing - decent deal relative to the market at the time. According to Glasses I would now be lucky to get £14k for it with 58k showing. That's very steep over 18 months, but I suspect not any worse than anything else I could have bought. And it still feels entirely solid, and I don't mind the prospect of putting another 100k on it - at which point it will have dropped in price to very little (but still sellable - diesel 7 seater merc estates always are), but my price per mile will also have fallen very satisfyingly.

The depression/recession (depending on your political colour!) for me has simply had the effect of making me keep my car for longer, which frankly is somethign I should do anyway. If the trade-in price had held up well, I would now be doing my man-maths on all sorts of vehicles:o

I am sure you're not the only one in this position. The thing is, what else can we do with our time, if we can't spend it doing man-maths!

I have just done a similar upgrade with my MY03 ML270 to a MY07 ML420.

It was in October last year and I managed to get £7k for the old girl then with 75k on the clock. I had owned it since new.

No doubt my 420 has depreciated faster than my old ML270 over the last few months but I console myself with £600 per month car allowance, otherwise I would not have changed it. I will keep the 420 for 4-5 years and do another trade in then.

I think you have a perfectly good car there, and unless you can afford to lose £500 per month in depreciation on a newer ML then I would keep it for a bit longer. The garages seem awash with 320's and in a years time there will be some deals I am sure.

The difference between the two cars is night and day though.

Good luck.
