Turbo Technics

as usuall i got mixed up with what he (the 20 odd years of being a merc mechanic) told me

this time ive taken notes

the problem was that when the head gasket was changed 3 years ago (and the start of all the problems)

the variable valve timing was out and he guessed that it was either that or the pistons

well he opend the engine up and checked it and it was indeed 2 teeth/positions out and he thinks that when this is done it will run fine

there was a pipe missing/broken/not on right and also 1 other thing that he adjusted

he is also replacing some kind of seal as he said its a good idea to change that while its apart

when doing the pressure test all 6 cylinders were the same so thats what made him think the VVT was set wrong

i remember when i bought the car in march 07 that he said his mate had changed the headgasket and the problems had been after that

good job that since the head gasket was changed the car has done about 100-200 miles and most of that quiet slowly (except the odd burst) so the valves are not bent and there seems to be no other damage

im sure this time ive got it right

should be ready for friday/saturday

That could be a nice easy, cheap result. Good luck with the repair.

great news

he rang me an hour ago to say the engine is now at 150psi !!

and that i can have it monday/tuesday as there is a seal that he stuck on and its not set propperly

i asked how likely is it that the car wont run fine now and he said not much of a chance

think i should keep it now

thats a result! should have bought it off you when it was for sale!

my mate the regular mechanic took a half day today as we expected to pick it up around 2pm

then when he rang and said we cant have it till tuesday due to the bank holiday i thought he was going to die

all the work that he has done and parts are going to be under £500 !

that £500 has taken my car from being worth £3,000 to maybe £6,000 or even more as its lovly

just need to sort the sunroof out as it sticks every now and then

i shall do a video and host it on photobucket because on you tube the sound is always out by a few secs

just hope nothing goes bang

it was factory fitted before the car was deliverd to the 1st owner (im the 3rd)

no its never run right, in the 1.5 years ive had it or the 2 years the last person had it for

management ive no idea

after TT trip, no they said it needed to be diagnosed on a merc computer and they did not have one

TT were really good but did not sort the problem

i cant look at it myself as being a person with a permenant set of my own wheels (wheelchair) i cant do stuff like that & im fat

might just ebay it and cross my fingers as if TT cant find the fault and no one else deals with turbos of that kind im nackerd really !
sell it on and buy a nice 5 pot coupe mmmmmm

If you don't find it deeply enjoyable when it's fully on song, I'll be very surprised.

I'm still willing to buy those spark plugs, by the way.

ive just sent you a pm

yes i too hope it will be lovly

not sure if its the kind of car that can be used say once a week and then pushed quiet hard on and off for a few hours, will it cope with that or go bang

Congratulations on finally getting it sorted and hopefully for a reasonable amount of cash. Okay a lot of time has been spent on it, now you can get round to enjoying it...

It's a daily driver with performance in the 500E league, but much better fuel consumption and also RHD.

No PM received as yet.

its cost me just under £500

but do i spend another £600 for new hand controlls as thats alot to spend on a car if im not sure if i should keep

as its cost me so much to fix im just concerned that it will go bang or fall apart again although its only done 140k

my friends tell me to just sell it now while its 100%

anyway did not pick it up today (tuesday) as the new seal kept poping out so it should be ready wednesday afternoon

just had a call and his first words were "wow that car shifts"

so its all back together and working fine

i asked him to compare the acceleration to a new merc (as he has driven them all) and he said probably the same as the new cl500 v8

as ive never been in a new merc im not sure if thats good or not but he said it was

so ill get it back tommorow, vallet it and put it up for sale on autotrader & fleabay as ive seen a lovly dark red convertible id like

Result! drive it for a while and tell us how it feels....then sell it if you can!! Would teh dark red convertible be about £8.5k by any chance?;)
